We have a Hunter 37.5 and are planning another trip to The Bahamas this Fall. We're thinking of adding a ground plate for better grounding of our electronics (we have no SSB radio but may add a receiver)and better lightening protection. Any thoughts? Bud

Maybe

As for lightning protection, that has been up for grabs in every discussion. What electronics do you need that kind of ground for? Radar? It mit help but not needed. SSB? diffenitly but it has to be dedicated to SSB. With anything else grounded to sea water you now really have to start thinking about galvonic corrosion. Your Hunter probably has all mylar thru hulls now. You don't have that worry. Start looking at galvonic isolators if you go ahead with this project.

There are several articles at www.sailnet.com

Go to the site and search on Kevin Hughes. He covers the basics on grounding and bonding, galvanic corrosion and lightning in several different articles.
