Groco head and a newbie sailor

I have a Groco marine head on my boat and I am not sure if I am the problem or my head. I have been leaving head in the WET FLUSH position and when I pump it the water enters the bowl and the contents exits, but once I have finished pumping the bowl continues to fill with the lake water until it reaches the very top of the bowl, and then I assume it continues to fill my waste tank (not 100% sure on this however when I used the head the next day the overflow spit out on deck, after have cleaned out the tank a day earlier). So the question is this am I the problem in not understanding how to use the head or is there a valve not closing after I pump on wet flush? Thanks

Yes, Jerry, you are at least part of the problem.

It's not wise to leave the head in the wet flush mode. You're depending on a little membrane to keep your boat from sinking. Apparently, the top of your head is at about the water line, so it doesn't over-fill. Most people suggest the following procedure: 1. Open the head intake through-hull. Using the wet flush, put a little water in the bottom of the bowl. 2. Do your thing. 3. Pump the contents into the holding tank with a few pumps. 4. Switch the lever to dry bowl. 5. Pump dry. Continue pumping for at least 10 pumps (this clears the waste line to the holding tank). 6. Close the head intake through hull. Most boats now have a vented loop in the head intake line to prevent siphoning of water through the wet bowl setting, but the most important part is to close the through hull when the head isn't in use. close the valve

You should definitely install a vented loop. Contrary to the instructions in the attached link I believe it should be in the line between the pump and the bowl. Heed the words about closing the valve. "Failure to close the valve could flood the toilet" not to mention sink the boat. Alchemist's caution to close the thru hull each time is good but can be a pain in the a** depending on where it is located Perhaps Peggy will add her comments.

Two different vented loops...

Groco's instructions refer only to a vented loop in the discharge line, which is usually only needed if the toilet is plumbed to flush directly overboard...although it can help to prevent backflow from the tank when the boat is heeled if the inlet fitting in the tank is in the wrong place (which 99% of 'em are). They don't make any mention at all of a vented loop in the intake.
