Hardwood charcoal - where to get it

We have been able to find it in quite a few places. Cheapest we have seen at about $7 for 20-lb bag is Western Beef. Have also seen it at Home Depot and even Pathmark, but not reliably. There is a hardware store in Port Washington that always has it for about $16 a bag. Have even seen it in Manhattan at a Korean grocery. You might have to look a little but it does exist and there is just no comparison to briquettes. Twice the heat output with no ash. We also burn a mixture of hardwood charcoal and anthracite coal in our solid-fuel cabin heater. But that's another story.

Monty, come on, give up the bread recipe....

Monty, Here is a simple works every time Salmon recipe. Salmon filet (your choice of size) Skin on is best. About 45 minutes before it goes on the grill, cover the flesh side with Grey Poupon. ( this is the main ingredient in my family's Bimini Sauce. The result of a cruise to Bimini with minimal supplies. The original had rum, worstershire, and some other stuff but I find it just as good and less space consuming just to use Grey Poupon.) Lay on the grill skin side down, leave lid on the grill, cook until the flesh flakes and the color is even all the way through the fish. 15 to 20 minutes. When it is done it will side right off the skin in flakes. Peter, I agree the charcoal is great. I also use hardwood and Home Depot is also my source. Now I know why I have bought two of the Magma charcoal grills so cheap on E-Bay. r.w.landau

We used a Force 10 since the '80s.

We had a hell of a time keeping it lit. Even with no wind, it would just blow out. (propane model) When it warmed up, it would still make a whoomp sound like it was blowing out but it would then remain lit. Replaced the burner, exactly the same. Go figure. I have one of those square gas grills now, that are made in Canada. Have no idea how it works. We have horses! Get it? *grr http://www.sportbbq.com/

Sport BBQ

I've got one of those Sport BBQ's that Fred mentioned, only I have the round one. My wife picked it up for me off ebay brand new for $130 including the cover, stand, and pot rack. The thing works great, has the hinged lid too like the Force 10 and also has single screw installation/removal. I made a $5 bracket from pieces from Home Depot and have used the thing a few times, works like a champ! The guy on ebay who sold ours used to have one posted every other week, don't know if he's still selling them or not...
