I was just wondering how many people use their gas grill (Magna, Force 10 ect.) while at the dock? Just wondering Al

Al, often, steaks, salmon, sausages, etc. Mmmm.

On the hook, in a secluded calm cove, drinking several brewskies, watching the sun set. Paradise!

I try to be a good neighbor....

and as much as I like to grill, I don't at the docks. There is nothing more anoying than having the person next to you with his/hers grill creating so much smoke that you wish to call the fire department. It can really ruin your day if you are down wind. For that reason, I grill when I go to the islands, but not at the docks. That is one disadvantage when you are docked in crowded marinas. Just at thought next time you turn the grill on. Abe

I used mine quite a bit at the dock...

Some of our best dock parties started spontaneously because a couple of people on the dock were cooking out, so others decided to join 'em, contributing whatever they had or if necessary making a flying trip to the nearest market for meat and anything else needed to add to shared side dishes, salads etc... We cooked on the dock so often we even chipped in and bought a couple of picnic tables for the dock. Unfortunately, though, some marinas won't allow the use of grills in the slip, even though they overhang the water and don't violate any fire laws that prohibit grills on the dock.

all the time !

I use the grill all the time.I would have to suggest,at least at our marina, most use the grill when needed. I think food always taste better when done of the grill as well as being healthier for you.As far as smoke I don't have a issue with any one using there grill and I don't see much difference between using grill at dock or at anchor. The only thing you may want to check is that your marina allows it, there are some marina who will not allow you to use a grill on the boat however I have noted that they have "community" grill provide by the marina.

We do too!

We use ours for dockside appetizers during cocktail hour. Our marina only allows gas grill though. Enjoy and invite your down wind neighbors. Jeff

Most marina contracts say no...

open flames within x feet of the docks. I think this is a safety issue. But "open flame" would presumably include a built-in gas range inside the boat. When I asked at one marina, they said yes, it included all open flams. Go figure.

Marinas I was at always said OK, but

the grill had to be on the boat, as opposed to the dock.

Same here...

The grill had to overhang the water, of course...it couldn't overhang the dock or be in the cockpit. But overhanging the water applies any time, no matter where you are--in the slip or on an anchor. Grills, whether charcoal or gas, should never be used inside the gunwales, ONLY overhanging the water.

all summer

We a year ago we managed to live all summer on the boat and were often in our slip. Grilled most days. No complaints but not many other people were doing likewise. I didn't see it as much different than the club's BBQ whose delicious smell often alerted us that it was dinner time... Alone in the bay on the hook with a drink at sunset however can't be beat.

Thanks for the answers!! Now I'm hungry

I will check with our marina, I have used our grill at the dock several times in the past but just wandered what others do. Our Marina is directly under a Damon's restaruant and it would be hard to compete with their down wind smoke!! Maybe that is why our marina has some of the best fed sailors around!! On Lake Erie anyway!! Thanks again happy Grillin!!

Sorry, No Grilling At Battery Park

Sorry Al, we also dock at Battery Park and it is in the contract that we cannot grill at the dock. We have to take the grill to the park.
