Got a question for anyone familar with small Greymarine engines or general gearheads. I am part owner of a 1917 launch that was repowered ages ago with a small Grey four. Anyhow, I found it has two broken valve springs. I am running into some difficulty finding parts sources. Anyone have one in their back pocket? What I am thinking as an alternative is to take the springs to an engine builder to see if they can match up to something. I can't believe they made their own springs. I think it is a marinized Continental. What you say, Fred? Rick D.

Go to the oldest auto junk yard

in you area and talk to the oldest gray head there. I bet he will find something that will work.

Yep, that should work too if nothing is online.

Try google, first thing. But a good machinist will measure the diameter of the spring and look up the seat pressure. (open pressure is minimal). Or you could save him a minute and bring along one of your good springs. I suspect that you will be told to replace the set if you have two now broken.

Gray not Grey Marine....

...thanks guys, that's my thought too. Monte, I did go to that site and it was helpful, but no real leads to a parts source. Something will come up, and if not, I'll take one of the exhaust valve springs to someone who can spec it and maybe figure out a replacement. PS: there was an interesting engine in a Gar Wood at a wooden boat show this weekend. 800 cubic inch V 12 flat head with dual plugs and two big side drafts. It was a Stirling, and there are few around. Bet he doesn't take it into salt water. Impressive hunk of iron.

Greymarine engines

Had twin graymarine v8 units ina a 34 foot Greenwich pigboat many moons ago. In those days(early 70's) American Motors owned Graymarine. Worth hunting up/having parts fabricated. Very dependable engines. Good Luck! Jim

Old Engine Parts

There is a company called Egge Machine in Santa Fe Springs, CA that makes parts for various old engines. Besides sailing, playing with old cars is another sickness of mine. Egge made pistons and valves for my 1933 Franklin, I'm sure they can help. Give them a call.
