Hello there. Can any of you salty's help me please? I need to clean up the grey rub rail and would like to know what to use and how any of you have done it??? Any help and advice greatly appreciated. I have just had a new bottom on her and the sides buffed and waxed, and the rail is looking really bad now *cry. Thanks in advance.

I use

A compound found under the kitchen sink. Not sure the brand names over there but down under it is either called VIM or AJAX. It's a fine white powder. Using a green pot scrubber helps. I know that this is simply a very fine abrasive but it's the only way I have found of removing gunk.

Solvents

I tried a number of products to clean the grey rub rail this spring. The best were solvents including acetone and lacquer thinner used with a Scotchbright pad. The solvent did not seem to soften the rubber. I put a coat of wax on the clean rubrail.

Greased Lightning....

...High Performance Auto & Shop Cleaner and Degreaser used full strength melts the gunk off the newer Hunter rubrails like yours with minimum effort. Rinse well, let dry and protect with a UV vinyl protectant such as 303 Aerospace. I've tried everything else and this works. Acetone is nasty stuff.

Suggestions

Yesterday I was amazed that Starbrite "Instant Black Streak Remover" got off all but spots where there was solid material caked on the uPVC. In the past I always used a PVC cleaner as supplied to the plumbing trade for cleaning uPVC pipes prior to gluing. It contains MEK and precautions are needed.

Greased Lightening

another vote for this product...it made this an easy project and I got great results. Be sure to wash off and coat your rub rail with wax. I have used acetone in the past, but will NEVER use it again on the rubrail.

Mr. Clean Magic Eraser does about 15' per sponge. This year I'll try greased lightening.
