Grey Non-skid Fix?

When I bought my 340, I thought the few white streaks I saw in the grey non-skid was old wax or something that I could clean out of the grooves. Well, it never did clean up, and every time I scrub the deck I see more of it. I think they didn't get enough grey gelcoat in the deck mold before they put in the white gelcoat. It's only down in the grooves of the diamond pattern, not on the high spots, so it's not wear.
Has anyone else seen this on their Hunter two-tone deck? Has anyone tried to repair it by without repainting the entire the non-skid areas? Some kind of touch up? Any ideas?
It's not that noticeable, but if there was an easy fix...

My 2000 460 has the same streaks in the grey non-skid side decks. I figured I would need to paint it when it started to bother me enough.

The fading looks identical to that on our '91 H30, with the exception that the '91 simply has grey textured non-skid (no underlying texture pattern), so I assume it's some sort of acrylic over coat that was rolled on in my case. In fact, the texture looks identical to kiwi grip. My boat has both white and grey non-skid, so I plan to order both white and grey kiwi grip, then probably put a bit of white in the grey to get the correct match and recoat the faded sections. The grey kiwi grip sample on SBO looks a little darker than my faded grey... haha.

Bill, it's not only your boat. Ours has BLACK rather than white. Annoying. I tried mildew remover, got most of it. Yours sounds like thinning finish paint. I agree with Scosta. Your boat, your choice. Good luck.

I have very similar lines on my h40.5 grey non-skid areas. I opinion is that it is a factory defect of not enough grey gelcoat applied. I don't remember exactly when it appeared, but somewhere in the 5-8 years seems likely. I was going to get some of the grey gelcoat from my local Hunter dealer for touch-up but it was one of those jobs that was way down on my punch list. At the time my Hunter dealer routinely provided gelcoat for touch up at no charge.

That grey nonskid is a paint, not gelcoat. I needed some for a repair some time ago and as Rich said, Hunter was happy to send me a small can - it's only available by the gallon now at $200+

If that's the case, take a locker lid into an auto parts store and have them mix you up a can using the lid as the color source.

For those of you who have damaged non skid diamond shape patterns, there is a reverse non skid that you can get to use in the repairs.

when you decide to do it right yourself aluminum oxide set in 2 part epoxy with at least 2 coats of l.p. will give you new decks for the next 20 some years and you will have a far better deck than when your boat was new

I've used Duraback on my H-27 and KiwiGrip on my H-30.

Kiwigrip get my vote. Duraback was harder to use and even the light grey was to hotrk in the sun.

To prep for Kiwigrip sand a little with 80 or 100 grit on an orbital sander, Wash well with water and detergent, wipe dry with a rag and then wipe with a clean rag and xylene, mask nice and neat and coat with Kiwigrip.

You can do the bow and port deck and cabin top in one day and cockpit and starboard side on the second day. Kiwigrip is easy to use and clean up. It will take less than an hour to put the Kiwigrip on. But you have to remove the masking tape after about an hour to 90 minutes. (More if it's cold, less if it's hot out) You have to remove the tape after the Kiwigip start to set up but before it hardens in order to get a nice neat edge. If you wait to long it wil lift the edge of the Kiwigrip you've just applied.

The roller they supply works great. You can practice on a piece of Masonite or thin fiberglass panels they sell for shower enclosures. I tired several techniques it to figure out the best combination of Kiwigrip amount , pressure and roller technique to get a good result.

Dramatic results........

Thanks for all the comments and suggestions. I don't think I'm going to redo the nonskid with Kiwigrip or Duraback to hide a few white streaks on my 340 (but, I will definitely use one of those on the deck of my old 26.5 my son and I are slowly refitting). It is interesting to find out the grey is paint and not gelcoat. I may try to find some matching paint and do a little touch up when there's no wind and I'm at the marina enjoying some adult beverages. But, I do agree with Rich, it is way down on the "punch list"..., too much important sailing to do. Thanks again.
