Hi all we have been invited to go on a charter out of the grenadines this June on a 48 cat with the moorings I think. So what info do we need to know about sailing there at that time of year, has anyone one been on this trip and what can we expect. We were told its not just sailing and will include some land exploring. My wife is wondering what to bring along to wear, friends from North Carolina are setting it up with a cook and captain. I would rather do a trip to BVI's and do our own sailing and cooking like we do on our own boat here and mix in some Island eating, but what the heck she really wants do do it and need to let them know soon. I have always wanted to do a charter on a big cat and been trying to put a trip on one for years so we are both into going. Nick

Grenadines, me too.

I'm at the Annapolis boat show and I just booked a bareboat (via Sunsail) to the Grenadines in April 2008. I too would like any info you all can provide. It sounds great. I've done BVI and we enjoyed that too. Grenadines seem to be a little less crowded and less touristy. Thanks. Bob

A great place to start for info is: http://www.usual-suspects-sailing.com/ We got a lot of great info there before our trip to the Grenadines a couple years ago. The sailing was more challenging than in the BVI's...higher waves, winds, currents...but it's more beautiful (IMO) Some really memorable anchorages there...some were still very crowded, but others were not. The Firefly restuarant is the coolest place I've ever eaten bar none. I should also point out that our boat was broken into at Bequia. It's a great trip!

Ed!!!! That was a 'hard' read!

Tobago Keys is my favorite place on Earth. We spent WEEKS there hanging on the hook. I know nothing of the logistics of a charter but that's the only way we're going back (unless we buy a boat in the Caribbean). We took a crewed charter once, over 20 years ago. Wonderful.

Grenadines....

The Grenadines are very different from the BVI - all the islands were nice and the people generally OK. You have to watch out for the "boat boys" constantly trying to sell you stuff. They untie dinks while there talking to you and they know how much the Moorings/Sunsail charge for a replacement, so they sell it back to you just under the cost. If you want to keep it - lock it up!!!!

We did the Grenadines out of Canouan last August with the Moorings. They did a great job with provisionings on the boat. We paid for 3 days of food and had nearly enough for the 10 day trip. The market in Canouan is pretty limited so I would recommend the provisionings to at least get you started. Lots of great markets on Union and in Bequia. You go to the Grenadines for the sailing, the sailing, the sailing, and to get away from it all. If you pack more clothes than will fit in an average size backpack you have packed more than you will need. Going in the summer months is definately the low season which means more peace and quiet. Bottom line, book the trip, you will be glad you did.

I haven't been to the Grenadines, but...

I was on a 48 ft cat at the Boat Show yesterday. Being a monohull sailor for the past 30 yrs or so, it's hard to imagine the space such a boat provides. The one word I would use to describe this boat is "magnificent." I noted at least four double berths in four totally separate and private cabins plus at least 2 "crew" berths. The main salon is about the size of my living room at home. This baby charters in the BVI and other Carrib islands for $11,000 per week. I think it's wider than my boat is long. I'll bet you have a grand time on such a boat....

We chartered the Grenadines....

....several years ago. We chartered a Moorings 50 out of Grenada. Tobago Cays is one of my top 2 prettiest places in the world (the peak of Mt Vallusia in St. Anton, Austria is the other). Make sure you have dinner at the restaurant in Salt Whistle bay. We were lucky enough to witness a partial (~80%) eclipse of the sun as we sailed south down the east coast of Grenada. Like they say, "Pack fewer clothes and more money than you think you will need and you'll be fine" Have fun, Tom s/v Orion's Child
