Hi all. Bought my first sailboat 2 months ago and so far I'm loving it. It's an O'Day 302.

Now a question. With the stock Yanmar 2GM20F, a clean hull, prop, and shaft, how fast should I be able to motor? My tach is not working but it seems that full speed has me just over 5kts, which seems a little slow.

What do you think?

Hull speed in theory

1.34 X sq rt (length water line)

Fix you tech and run the diesel at max torque usually 2800 to 3000. It'll last longer. Diesel dont like light load.

Check the engine manual.

5.5 to 6 is about right and keep in mind that water current has affect on hull speed, best way to check is with a gps or a smart phone with a gps app and early in the morning with no wind and flat sea's should give you the best results, another factor is the prop correct? sounds like it is but best get the tach working or replace it, their about a hundred dollars for a universal unit and then you can see what rpm the engine is producing at wide open throttle

Congrats on the new boat
