Beneteau 43 foot Tongyoung/Korea:south
I'm Korean(South), not well English. Please understand.

My master bought Beneteau 43(not family type, Oceanice ver. may) 2011. Furling Mainsail(In- mast, Vertical batten-not full, Neilpryde) and
Furling Headsail(Genoa, Neilpryde, Formpad attached, reefing point marking, may 130%)

Rig is Discontinued Sidestay and Fix backstay.

Assembly and Rig tunning are Beneteau USA engineer come to here, and done.

Rig tunning not use tension gauge, only his experience sense.

All working done, have Sea Trial. But, same problem is existence. But, wind so strong(over 20 Knot, Gust-30~35knot and Choppy sea.) and so short time.

We think that, maybe gentle breeze and smooth sea condition - all working OK.

But, last sunday sailing. Problem re-floating.

Wind speed 12~15 knot, gust 20~25 knot. wave height 0.1~0.5m.

Mainsail is full body flutter. So serious. Not only leech. luff and belly all part of sail. enclose photo. Leech is more than other parts.

Tight pull Outhaul(mainsail unfurling sheet-mainsail operation sheet), vang, mainsail sheet, leech chord, halyard etc.

What is more, move traveler windward. But over-power make. over-heeling and weatherhelm.

And genoa leech is same problem. Only leech flutter.

To solve, genoa fairlead move forward. But sail curve and belly depth are deep, make over-power and weatherhelm. And not absolutely remove flutter.

First time, no reefing-full main and genoa sailing.

In condition, lee side rig are all loose. Moreover Radar-Reflector are break, because D2(Discontinued sidestay between lower and upper spreader) wire loose and shock.

Backstay(lee side) in also loose.

Yacht heel over 20 degree, and over-power and more drag and weatherhelm.

We decide reef main and genoa. Both 1st reefing.

Soon, she is calm and comfortable, speedy. Mainsail not flutter and genoa flutter decrease. Rig loose are remove.

Above are all condition of sailing. Below is my question.

All crew member think that, "loose rig" are problem. But, losse rig are reason of mainsail flutter? I know that, loose rig are reason of mast-pumping in strong wind.

I first time meet with mainsail full body flutter. leech flutter is more tension of leech(leech chord or mainsail sheet or vang). But this problem is not solve my ability.

So, engineer said "In-mast furling mast is not same rake and pre-bend like other common yacht. Because, if mast bending, top of mast and top of furling units are friction. Finally breakdown."

Is it true? Master's yacht is loose rig life-style?

Not sailing, in marina. rig tension are some tight.

Sail making are fault? Only soution is reefing? Other sail tune is fault?

Thanks read, wait reply. :)

Rig may need tighten.
Reefing sails over twenty.
Reef soon not later.

That is a Haiku!
Bit off more then I can chew
Reefing is the way

Sorry, I could not resist the challenge to make a Haiku poem which is of course Japanese and not Korean.

It sounds like you just need to be able to reef your main and furl in your genoa for when the winds get stronger.

Good luck and welcome!

Anyo Haseyo,

I can't help you. This is WAY beyond me. But maybe you would have better luck in the Don Guillette forum on this site. It's all about sail control.

currently boatless wishing Harrington Harbor North, MD
Large sails on boat designed for very light winds (5-10 knots max)
to make work without reefing makes boat heel very much
must reef to keep from heeling very much
