Oct 19 2008 starting early sunday morning loading last of food and equipment
with Capt Russ, fishing expert Ed, provision man rauol and seadaddler owner nick.
Cast off from Brewers Marina iat 1pm into Gardiners bay with NE 30 kts of wind 6' chop out going tide, after getting beat up pretty bad from rough seas and ED and Rauol got sea sick pretty bad,so we decided to stop off inside Montauk Harbor and anchor over night.
Nick and Russ cooked up a nice pasta dish and watch a DVD while ED and Rauol past on dinner and just rested with some sleep.
10/20/08 headed out around Montauk point 1 pm with NNE wind 15 kts and SOG 7ts ,10/21/08 Hudson Canyon SW windk 20 kts SOG 7kts.4' chop.
10/22/08 NW wind 20kts 4' to 6' chop confused waves SOG 5 kts.
10/23/08 Autopilot stops working NW wind 20kts 4' to 5' chop confused waves SOG 5kts.Ed caught a Mai Mai
10/24/08 Heading into Cape Hatteras calling for local help on VHF,CG helps us get into Cape Hatteras Inlet, don't think we would have made it in safely with out the help of CG who were realy very helpful and real nice guys.
Docked at teach's Marina and attempted to get the autopilot fixed, did some laundry shower and went to Dirty Dick's crab place for some cold beers.
Nice people at teach's marina, had dinner on board DVD good night sleep.
10/25/08 sailed Pamlico Sound all day 30kts wind down to Adams Creek and anchored for the night, grilled up a london broil and ed's Mai Mai and another good night sleep.
Motored down Cedar Creek ICW down to Morehead city where fueled up and took some Showers,Rauol decides to get off boat and drive down to Florida,he really did not really get over feeling sick.
12 pm cleared the breakwater and out the inlet.
10/27/08 32 NM off Cape Fear,NC
My turn to reel in a fish which turned out to be a nice size King Mackrel
ed and russ clean and cook what was one of the best tasting fish I ever had
while watching a wonderful orange sunset,we each did three hour shifts at the helm hand steering without autopiolet.
10/28/08 181 NM off Georgia coast an inverted front came out of the west at night which was a full Gale winds 35 to 45 kts, needless to say it was not fun and had us jumping around re trimming our sails.
10/29/08 pulled into Cape Carnavel marina late at night and had a good sleep at the fuel dock.
Next morning girls at the marina let us use the showers and off we went down the barge canal and motored down the ICW all day and got to the dock at the Fort Pisrce town marina for the night.
Went into town for some clams and cold drinks.
10/30/08 Motored back to Riverside Marina where it will stay until I set sail around the keys for Punta Gorda.
It was a great adventure that I always will remember.

Yeah Nick,

Welcome to the great Atlantic Ocean... You guys have my admiration for toughing it out, (and I empathize w/ Rauol).

Thanks for the info about Hatteras Inlet... It's good to know that the CG is there to help you thru w/ their local knowledge... Teach's sounds like a great place.

Good luck w/ the autopilot repairs and have a great trip thru the Keys

Rauol did call us when we got into Fort Pierce and did fly over to bahamas and look at a boat he was interested and made the deal to buy so I am waiting to hear when he will bring it to Florida and than NY,he did a good job while on my boat but he just never could feel 100%,I still can't beleive that I did as well as I did not getting real sick just some uncomfort at times,it was not always a smooth ride.
Are you heading down to KW,thanks again for the info on the trip down to the keys,I am sure I will use it all when I sail around.
I have seadaddler on the hard in Ft Pierce and will bottom paint,I think my folding wheel which one of the folding tubes loosened up and than when we were at the helm in some of the rough nights being tossed around caused too much pulling and pressure on the autopilot, the folding wheel always worked real good but I guess the rough offshore conditions were too much for it.
Lewmar said no problem they will send a new one and I sent the MKII wheel part of the autpilot to Raymarine for repair or replace, its still under the 2 year warranty.
It really feels good to be home here in Port Charlotte and a relief that seadaddler is in Florida, with Thaksgiving around the corner it's not so bad not having the boat here on the west coast.

Re: Way to go - Nick

Nick,
You guys did a great job getting Seadaddler all the way to Fla w/ a broken autopilot , (& no other equip problems). BTW, I've stayed at Harbortown Marina in Ft Pierce a few times; nice place... Hope Riverside is also.
I was to have left this past Mon for Fla; but, w/ the economy being slow, (which caused my crew to be unable to go), and other "issues", ...looks like I'll just stay here this Winter
Wish I could have cruised the Keys w/ you during Christmas, but it looks like we're gonna have to settle for planning an after Christmas-New Years trip down into Carolina. ie, Dismal Swamp canal, Eliz City, Manteo, Hatteras(Teach's Lair :snooty:), Ocracoke (for New Years) :), then back up, probably via Belhaven, Coinjock. (Anybody else wanna go??). Far less fun than cruising the Keys, but maybe we'll get lucky and have a few sunny, mild days, ... and I've never been into Hatteras or Ocracoke by boat.

I'm already missing those warm Fla Keys; have fun.

Thanks for the log Nick.

Great pictures too. You may have answered this on a previous thread but how much motoring time would you guess while offshore?

When you entered Adams Creek you were just one creek east of my boat. Ladylove sits in Clubfoot Creek waiting to also make her way to Florida's west coast. But a little farther north to Port Richey if not Tampa Bay.

I wonder if Lake Okeechobee will be an option when I leave the Pamlico in January. I want to do the Keys but might be time-constrained. I know the lake is down but I only draw a little over four feet.

At any rate I look forward to your next log.
