We are planning to cruise the greek islands next May or June for 10 days. Have any of you cruised the islands? Our thoughts now are to bare boat but have a cook that knows the islands. Any thoughts as to the best charter company in Greece? We might sail Turkey but the islands off greece seem more interesting. Moorings and Sunsail have bases there but they are more expensive than local charter companys but "maybe" you get what you pay for. We sail a Cat. 310 here in MDR and have bareboated in the British Virgins many times...great place to sail. Roger

vernicos

We used vernicos charters 2 years ago. We chartered a lagoon 38 out of alimos (near athens. The boat quality and service was very good. We would use them again. There are bazillions of charter companies in greece, so it can be hard to figure out who to go with. If you have never sailed in greece, you should know that you will generally tie up in very close quarters where ever you go. Usually you need to tie up "stern-to" which can be a little intimidating in a tight port with boats all around and a hydrofoil zipping by, but you get the hang of it fast. The problem with greece is that it is so spread out that the sails between some of the islands are many hours, and the water can get quite rough, at least compared to the bvis. If you only have 10 days, you wont be able to cover a lot of ground, so you need to plan a realistic itinerary, unless you can arrange a one way charter, which will be much more expensive. We sailed from alimos along the pelopponese isles to hydra, then across to the cyclades, then back to athens in about a week. You should buy greek waters pilot, by rod heikell. This book provides great information on all the isles and ports. Your boat will likely have it, but it can help you to plan in advance.
