When my father taught as a watch officer for a Summer at Hurricane Island Outward Bound, he told his students that they tied a square knot just like they tie their shoes, except when he looked down, he noticed not one of them tied their shoes correctly.

I have seen a couple of boats in my marina that were tied too tight and had a cleat rip out when the water level went down.
A few years ago we had a big spring storm hit the lake and the marina took some damage. I went to check on my boat and found the dock cleat had ripped out and was laying in my cockpit.

Years ago on a lake in Virginia, I had my boat break loose. Luckily a neighbor was able to fetch her and tie her off to his dock. The cleat was through bolted and the cleat was still attached to to the dock line and had pulled the entire plank off of the dock.

While sleeping through a particularly windy (50-60mph) night in November 2018, about 0245 I heard a loud bang like a gun shot went of near my head in the V-berth. I got up to inspect what might have happened. The wind howled through the rigging. There were sails flapping, jibs ripped to tatters, halyards banging, and a lot of boat movement but nothing looked out of place. Next morning in the light I found a mark on the hull about 2 feet from where my head lay in the v-berth, and the mid spring lying loose in the water. The cleat was gone. Ripped out from the planks on the dock. When it let loose it smacked into the hull.

Never know what might happen in a storm.
