I have been taking out a lot of rotted interior wood - see my other post on rotted wood. it involves cutting out wood in restricted situations. One tool that has been invaluable is a multitool oscillating tool that have recently been marketed by all toolmakers. I only have the saw attachment, but I am quite impressed by what one can do with it. I am cutting out sections of panels and this tool makes it easy to cut an outline and remove specific parts of the panel. It is much better than a jig saw because it does not require room for the up and down motion of the jigsaw blade. In addition, it makes an excellent electric chisel allowing me to quickly shave away layers of rotted wood down to solid wood.

I recently replaced both chainplate bulkheads and went through three or four tools trying to cut out the old fiberglass. Just not enough room. Finally went to Harbor Freight and bought one of those multitools, cheap, and it worked wonderfully. Even when the teeth wore off the attachment it was still cutting through fiberglass.

Hello Boat Repairmen.....
Those tools are an inexpensive version of the Fein Multimaster that cost between 4 and 5 hundred dollars. When we were repairing/rebuilding our first project boat the man who sold me the boat said I needed one of those tools. He was correct. Too bad he hadn't left his Fein in a sail locker! I never regretted spending the money for that tool and the kit that came with it, but I also like the cheaper versions that are available today. There are many jobs that can be accomplished easier with them and some jobs would be nearly impossible without them.

I after some researching I bought the Ridgid cordless version for a complicated home repair project last year. It fit my budget and came with a lifetime warranty, even on the battery so I figured I had nothing to lose. It has become my favorite tool and without it I couldn't have completed the repairs I needed to make. I have since found it to be indispensable for boat projects. I would recommend one of these to anyone that does any sort of diy work. If you don't have the budget for a Fein there are still some inexpensive alternatives that work well.

I re-cored a couple of transoms mainly with a hammer and chisel when I was a kid before I ever even new about these fein type tools - God I wish someone had told me (although I likely couldn't have afforded it back then - I think they have been around since the 80s though. One of my favorite tools.

In the olden days (about a month ago) it would have taken me a while to notch something like this 4x4 with drill and chisel. But with my new HF tool it takes a few minutes.
This is a leg for the tiki hut bar I made. Now I'll have to build the tiki hut.
They also work well for busting barnacles.
Please add my vote under "great tools".

Thanks for the thread!

I've had my eye on one of these in Home Depot, but the tool always seemed too good to be true. I might have to add this to my Christmas wish list this year.

I have NO regret buying the Fein as it is a lifetime investment and the quick change on the 250Q is great

No doubt that the Fein is the king with the variable speed andquick change tools.. but I bought the HF one (now on coupon sale for $19.99) and it has paid for itself several times over in saved time.. Used it a lot when opening the mast support beam for repair.. have used it on several woodworking projects and scraping jobs.. a fine (not Fein) little tool !! Note that HF has a variable speed one now as well as a cordless one.. Not for a production shop, but servs pretty well for a hobbyest (sp) on limited income !

Me, too. My FIL gave us one of these BEFORE we bought our big boat. I've cut new openings for 120 outlets, sanded wood, cut metal backing plates from aluminum flat stock. Mine is corded but I wouldn't pass up a cordless one to go with my drill. :)

I have both the Ridgid and the Dremel multi tools and use them regularly. They are both variable speed. Invaluable for cutting square holes for switches and instruments in wood or fiberglass.

When I cut out and replaced a rotted bulkhead, I did most of the cutting work with a metal cut-off wheel in a 4 1/2" grinder. It worked reasonably well for the tight cuts, but was dusty enough to require using a respirator mask.

I think one of these oscillating multi-tools just leaped onto my Christmas wishlist :)

They create very little dust as well, much less than a jigsaw. And the dust falls in one place, doesn't fly everywhere.

Hello, I originally got this tool to remove existing caulk in my bathtub but since then, I've found a use for it: Opening young fresh coconuts! :) "
