I may have posted this before - at my age you do repeat yourself.A very nice site here about Lake Freighters including AIS positions. www.boatnerd.com I saw the 730 ft. Canadian Minor pass by the house today - first freighter of the season. We don't get the 1000 footers here becasue the Welland's locks only take up to 730. The Welland opened on the 20th so the lake freighters are shaking out the cobwebs and getting back to work. Spring is coming!

Missing Lake Erie.

Ladylove and I left Huron, Ohio the end of July 2007. Out the Erie Canal we went with no plans to return. Now I am missing the few warm March days when we all ran up to the boats to remove the covers and begin the spring prep. And I am really going to miss the brisk offshore breezes and the 7+ knot romps over to the islands for a night on the hook. Now she sits in a very nice marina in North Carolina twelve hours away. Wondering what 2008 will bring? Maybe another boat for Lake Erie?

No warm days

We haven't had any warm March days - at least on L Ontario. I don't think Erie has been much different. I am chomping at the bit waiting for a stretch of reasonable weather to take off the tarps and get going.

Hey Higgs - we are nearly done dredging the harbour.

They figure they will be out of here and down to Newport by mid April (started in December). We are supposed to have 15 feet depth now. Come on over and you won't get stuck this year.

Spring is almost here

The first freighter of the season was in about a week ago breaking some ice. Opps,hit a bridge on the way in!

saw a freighter yesterday on Erie

I was doing some work in Lakewood right on the lake and a freighter passed by. The day before it was all ice covered as far as 7 miles out (I was in a high rise 120 feet above the lake - you do the math). The CG icebreaker came in and split it like Moses. Our marina is still iced in. I'm making a list, checking it twice, going in April 15th if possible. It was 45 today.

Still too cold for me. No matter, I still have some boat projects left to do. Working on mounting the GPS unit on swing-arm tonight. Today's sun got me excited.JerryA

I will have to find a weekend to come over there for a visit. My main cruise is to the 1000 Islands in late July. I am also planning a weekend trip to NYC in Toronto. The weekend ends with a race back to Olcott which I am actually going to enter with my full keeled cutter.OYC now has a deal with the town marina where visitors to our club can get free dockage. It is well protected there and only a couple of blocks from the club, so if the club docks look to be rough one can get a quiet night there. Come by for a visit. June 28/29 is our Wire Down Regatta. Great party and you would even hear me play guitar for the evening's entertainment.

the plan is to be there on the 4th and 5th of July. I am waiting for a call from a Walter (his last name escapes me) who is checking to be sure NYC can accommodate the 10 or 12 boats who are planning on making the trip.I look forward to that beer and meeting you in person.
