I remember news articles last year about people walking to caverns that are wet in the summer. Same thing this year?

Sadly no. The weather has been much warmer this winter over Lake Superior (read: kinda normal), and ice that was over a 2 feet thick this time last year is just starting to form. Most years it never gets to a thickness that the NPS deems safe for pubic use. Last year was kinda special. If you look past the weeks of non-stop numbing cold.

More real-time info here.

I just heard the western part of the lake is frozen, but the caves are not open for viewing yet as ice is not safe..

Perhaps if this cold weather continues.....
