We had a great day sailing Sunday on the York river in VA. This was the first time I had taken the whole family (wife and kids) out for a dedicated full day of sailing. We had (as a family) previously only been out on shorter (two or three hours) excursions. The wind was steady at about 10 MPH, it was overcast, and the air temperature was just about perfect. The porta potty came in handy a few times. My 3 year old managed to take an hour nap in the cubby cabin half way through the sail. My eight-year old also managed to find a comfortable place in the cubby cabin to relax (with enough blankets and towels). My wife stretched out in the large cockpit. Next time we might take along the dogs too.

Me 2 - Great day sailing

Yo Jeff, I went out with a couple green crew Saturday on Lake Oroville, CA to practice with the asym. We had a ball...mostly a comedy of errors. Wind forecast was 15-20 mph with gusts of 25-30. It was windy in the mountain town when I live when we left. Splashed just in time for the wind to quit! We could see it partway across the lake. Because we were practicing asym, we cranked up the motor and motored over to the wind. Sailed for a few minutes beating upwind and the wind quit. We could see it even further out. Motored over. Wind quit. Saw it further. Motored over. Wind quit. We gave up and ate lunch becalmed. Then, right after my PB&J, I could see the wind honkin' in and it had clocked almost 180 degrees. So we beat back upwind the way we came to get enuf room for the asym practice. Got it launched and flying nicely (I have an ATN sleeve...thank goodness!). Jibed and everything went wrong. "Get it down" I yell. Calmed the sucker, got prepped and launched it again. Then another attempted jibe, another "get it down", another prep, etc. Lost it three times before us older gents were too tired so we stowed it. Then I turned upwind and saw the caps! Too lazy to reef so we furled the jib and crawled back to the ramp. Lesson learned: Hard to tell what the wind is doing if you don't look upwind! Hard to see caps if looking to leeward! Duh! We were so involved in flying the asym I forgot to pay attention to the weather. Bottom line: We all had a ball playing with my beloved boat even if we looked like rank amateurs. Stinkpot Mike, my main crew, estimated the wind at 20 knots. Little stong to learn how to handle the asym! But, we just had a marvelous time overall.

I had a younger crew

I might get a asym next year or the year there-after. My crew needs to get a bit older.

Glad you had a great day sailing!

Hi Jeff, Glad you had a really good day sailing. I must say that I think you are very wise to involve your family, especially the kids at an early age, in your sailing. I can think of no better activity to develope a child than to involve them in sailing. On a separate issue, I'm thinking of adding a second set of load bars near the front of the trailer to ensure that the boat is centered when it gets on the trailer. Have you, or anyone else with a H216, considered such an option? I'v noted from other sites I visit that this option apparently works very well with larger power boats. Oh, something else have you gotten around to the repairs with the Plexus material? Lamar

H-216 Chat Room?

Yo Jeff, Lamar, Mr. Ernie, others: I wouldn't mind scheduling some time in the chat room for H-216 chat. (I have never done a chat before so this would be new to me.) What do u'all think? I am on PST and work M-Th.

I didn't even know of such a chat room but would be glad to participate. Just need a little advance notice and, of course, directions on how to get into the chat room.

this site has chart room

I noticed that this site has a chat room. You can get to it by clicking on "site map" and then look for the "live chat" link down the page. Apparently, we just need to schedule and reserve a time, pick a topic, and then simply show up and chat. Unfortunately, I just tried to enter the chat room and it said that the license had expired. The webmaster for the hunterowners site needs to renew the license. (I sent an email to info@HunterOwners.com) Assuming it gets renewed (or we find an alternative chat room) I'm EST and work M-F. Evenings are probably better for me. I'm pretty flexible on exactly when though. The hunterowners chat room apparently uses Java so you will need to have Java installed on your computer. If you don't have Java installed, you can install it by going to http://www.java.com and click on the download button. ----- I haven't yet fixed my scratches on my hull. I kind of figured I would wait until the season was over and then fix them all at once.

H-216 Chat Room

Taking the bull by the horns, how about Tuesdays at 9:00 PM EST, 6:00 PM PST? I can't do it any earlier as I don't get home from work till about 5:45 PST. As soon as the chat room is up and running, we can schedule our first chat.

Tuesday's at 9:00PM EST is good with me

Tuesday's at 9:00PM EST is good with me. I got a feedback email form the hunterowners webmaster that said he would try to get the chat license re-instated. He had let it lapse because no-one was using the site chat.

The chat feature of this site is back up and working. I reserved a chat time at 9:00PM EST tonight. To use the chat, take the following steps: 1. be sure that you have Java loaded on your computer. Browse to http://www.java.com to load it if you don't already have it. 2. Go to the homepage of this hunterowners site and click on the "site map" link. 3. Then click on the "live chat" link down in the page. 4. Make up a user_name, type it in, and press "connect" 5. You type in the bottom part of the screen and press "send" each time to transmit. The live transcript (from everyone) appears in the top part of the screen.

Saturday!!!!

WOW, Saturday must have been the day! I too, had the best sail. Got to the lake late, about 3:00, afraid wind would die, I went out anyway. Perfect day, warm enough for a tee shirt, till the sun started to go down, wind blowing 10-12 mph. Fantastic! I only wish I had someone to share it with. The only other person on the lake was another guy in a Cal22? He beat me solidly, but what a ride! I will probably post this on "Who do you sail with?", HA! Glad you all had a great day, too. Jeff, from Richmond, Great picture!

Chat Room

Sorry I couldn't participate in the chat room session - maybe next time. Just a suggestion --- I'd bet that there will be some very interesting items that get discussed during future chat sessions. I think it would be very beneficial to all if one of the chat partipents would take a minute and post such items to the forum. It seems that we are continuing to get new members and many are asking the same questions that most all of us have had at one time or another. Being able to refer them, and also ourselves when we forget, to the archives is one of the real benefits of the forum.
