Great 30 days on L. Michigan

Wow, what a great vacation we just had!!! We spent 20 nights on board, straight through, we traveled about 350 miles around Grand Traverse Bay, Little Traverse Bay and Beaver Island area.
The boat is pulled back out of the water now and back home but wow was it fun. The longest we had ever stayed on board before was about 7-8 nights. This time we only stayed in the same place for a max of 2 nights, the we would move. We would anchor for a night or 2 then get a slip for a night, and so forth. Most of the harbors in the area have live music in the parks nearby on weekends, it was awesome, live music at the boat.
You can see how much fun it was on my you tube channel: blowinganddrifting there are 16 parts. It is beautiful up here this time of year, truly a sailing/boating paradise. Just a short season.

Originally I hit the area 30 years ago and the highlight of the trip was Harbor Springs. I returned recently and found Harbor Springs to be the lowlight of the trip as it was big time snotty. Did you find that? The rest of the area is great. Northport is a favorite of mine as is Beaver. Traverse City has a lot to offer as well. I think the area gets overshadowed by Door County, but it is every bit as good a cruising ground and gets overlooked by L Michigan cruisers.

Higgs, yeah they can be alittle snooty but we just don't go ashore. I grew up here so we are used to it.

It's hard to imagine a better cruising location anywhere on the Great Lakes. I've been wanting to charter from Traverse City for a while now. I'm hoping to do it next summer. To tell you the truth ... I'm more interested in sailling there than BVI. It looks cool! ... as in much more comfortable than needing to duck into an air conditioned cabin to get away from the heat!

Scott, there is at least one charter company out of Traverse City, Bay Breeze? I have been to the BVI's twice and compare this area to them easily. Comparable sailing distances of your choice and beautiful anchorages, no moorings though, plenty of marinas and most of the little towns are right on the waterfront, as you can see in my vids.

Jim, no tides to deal with!! and NO SHARKS, great snorkling too. Lake Michigan is crystal clear to at least 30 feet these days, thanks to the zebra mussels of a few years ago.

Dean, I've been on the Bay Breeze web site to look at several cruising itineraries and destinations. They put together a very nice description of the area and there is certainly no shortage of places to visit, all the way from the Manitou Islands to Mackinac. The only problem I can see is not being able to afford enough time to enjoy it all! Bay Breeze does seem a little pricey, though, considering the age of many of the boats they charter. I suppose that goes with being virtually the only charter company in the area with any exposure.
