greasing stainless steel rudder post?

The SS rudder stock just rides in a fiberglass tube. . .no bearings. . .

I pulled it this year to polish the stock a bit around the top of the rudder. after 37 years it has some pitting. I hit with progressively finer grits of sand paper and water and just now scrubbed it down with lemon juice and then a fresh water rinse.

I checked an old PDF of the Ranger manual and it states to pump grease in via a zerk fitting. I would have thought that to be a bad idea, blocking oxygen and all. . .corrosion, etc. . .but the manufacturer seemed cool with it. . .just wanted to run this buy you guys and see what your thoughts were. . .whether I should lube it up before re-installation or not.

Grease prevents both water and oxygen from reaching the SS, so it will act as a corrosion inhibitor.

The wrong grease might possibly cause problems with the fiberglass, so make sure you verify compatibility before you apply it.

you may want to use the same grease you use on your winches...it is water proof to a point (not sure any lube is water proof) or maybe the plumbers grease you get at the hardware store....

Hmm. . .never thought of that. . .

I got a big tub of water proof trailer bearing grease I use for everything else. . .
