greasing combi prop

Greetings all. Can anyone please tell me how to grease the prop?
There are four holes in the hub. All of them have the head of an
allen bolt at the bottom. One of the holes has some grease residue in
it and some slotting along the inside. I suspect this is the one into
which I am supposed to fit a grease nipple. Nothing came with the
boat. There also do not appear to be any threads in the hole to screw
a fitting into. Am I missing something? Help? Thanks T

Do not remove the allen bolts as they hold the aft end of teh hub
together. There is a grease point on the aft side of the hub, sometimes
it has a screwdrive slot nut, sometimes a raised square.

Yes, the hole you saw no threads in is the one you need. There should be
threads in that hole, though. They should accept a "zirc" grease fitting. It
not, you may have to drill and tap threads into it to match a fitting you'll buy
- then plug the oole with a bronze / brass plug of the same size / thread.


Be sure to use water-proof grease. OMC offers a good one - at any Evinrude /
Johnson dealer.


Don't forget the grease fitting on the port-side of the gear box. It isn't
easily seen, but should receive the same water-proof grease.

Steve, are you saying that there is a fifth opening (in addition to the
4 allen bolt holes) somewhere on the aft end of the hub (not including
the centre bolt)? Thanks.

been lost and it is open.

Trying to find out the best way to bench check the dynastarter for correct output. Unfortunately gave it to a starter shop here in Marathon FL that put a hot lead up to the field posts. Quote, unquote "every time I hooked up a lead to the field poles it acted like a starter" ! Hoping he didn't burn out one or both windings. Just spinning the pulleys with a volt/ amp meter hooked up and no grounds or other connections it indicated .5 volts and .3 amps. off the field terminals . Any advice on this would be greatly appreciated.. Pat "PUFFIN" V 2137

Many thanks to you both, Ed and Steve. I finally located the grease
point -- it was hidden under a barnacle!

Does anyone have any suggestions for removing a heavy coating of
oxidation from the (bronze?) prop shaft between the stuffing box and the
motor without damaging the shaft?

Before you do anything with the sleeve, make sure the
outside diameter is 25mm, the wall's thickness is 2.5mm,
and the inside diameter is 20mm
The inside diameter should never change, but the outside
could change because of corrosion (oxidation). I know of
some one who cleaned the sleeve and ended up with a wall
thickness of less than 1mm; the sleeve broke!

Hello again gang. I just opened the thermostat housing and found the water
hole on the lower edge of the exhaust mainfold is completely clogged.
Question 1: what is the purpose of this hole? Question 2; should I try to
open it up? And how? There was no coolant in the exhaust manifold.
Question 2: should I be concerned? The motor has not been run up to
operating temperature for over a year. Question 3: is it advisable to
remove the entire exhaust manifold and give it a good cleaning? Apart from
the clogged water hole, the interior looks black with some black flaking but
far from clogged. How, I wish I were sailing! Thanks, Trevor (Mystic Rose

Correction -- the small lower water hole on the exhaust manifold is stopped
up with a brass plug. Is this normal?

Sorry to be a bother, but neglected to mention in my previous emails on
this subject that the motor is an MD6B. Thanks again to anyone who has any
light to shed on the subject.
