It would make sense to put some grease on my rudder pintles, but I remove my rudder to trailer my boat and I switch it with a mast crutch that rides in the same gudgeons. The grease would get on everything. How do you other trailer sailors handle this?

Catalina Direct sells plastic inserts, takes a little grinding, but they made the rudder turning nice and smooth, and no greasey mess.....

I changed out the gudgeon's on the old boat I owned to the newer ones with the delrin inserts, as Don said what a difference!
Should you decide to go this route (for the top gudgeon) do yourself a huge favor and cut two pieces of 1/4"X3" all thread rods remove two outer bolts and replace with the all thread rods then remove the two inner bolts and slide off the gudgeon replace with the new one. You don't want the brass bar to fall..... It becomes an all day job if it does to recover the brass bar the bolts thread into.

The MK's gudgeon's are lacking... piece of SS angle with a washer welded to the bottom side. They work but that's about all I can say of them. I see there is a replacement now for them as well.... I'll add them to the list!!
Like Don I don't use any grease....

Me neither. I think that grease would only collect abrasive dirt. The pintles and gudgeons on my "New Style seem fine but I had to work on the lower pintle this year because it was coming a bit loose. The nut needed tightening and then the top of the pintle needed to be hammered down just a bit.
