I have a 1984ish, Evinrude 8 hp Yachtwin. The grease fitting under the gear lever pulled right out when I tried to remove my grease gun. I have determined the whole is a bit stretched out: even a new grease fitting does not grab the hole hard enough to withstand the grease gun being pulled off. I have some slightly larger grease fittings from the autoparts store. I am planning on tapping the hole for one of these larger fittings. Any tips before I drill and tap the whole for the larger fitting? It has been 20 years since I have even seen a tap and die set.

Use white grease

on the drill bit and tap to catch the chips unless you can remove the part, which would be best. You can get a coupler for your grease gun that doesn't snap on the fitting and prevent future problems. Good luck. Tim

Some of the grease fittings are just pressed in

and those can pull out. Probe the hole with something skinny and see if you have room for the drilling and tapping without dismantling the piece. Remember to advance the tap about a half turn and back it up a quarter turn to break the chips. Don't go too deep which is posible with a tapered tap. After you get about four full threads pull the tap and check with the fitting for fit. Good luck.
