We have had a couple of Nor'Easters here on the Jersey coast in succession lately. My 35.5 stayed closed up for two weeks . .hot days, cool nights, high humidity and torents of rain and wind. On opening the boat up, I noticed a grayish cast on some of the wooden bulkheads . .not black mold but a gray almost suede-like speckling. I wiped it down with vinegar [ I hope the wood doesn't change color or raise the grain]and ventilated the boat. This is first time I have had this show up . .even after winter lay up I never have had this problem. What is it? how do get rid of it and prevent future occurrences? Is using vinegar OK on wood? Any advice would be appreciated . . . Fred Miller S/V M Squared

this should work...

Sounds like mildew, something we Florida sailors are very familiar with. Use a 50/50 bleach & water solution to kill the mildew, then go over the wood with Liquid Gold every 90 days to prevent the mildew from returning. This has worked for me for years.

Use Lemon Oil..

What you have is mildew...careful with the bleach on the wood. Go to Home Depot or Lowe's and get some Fornby's Lemon Oil. It works great on the wood, smells good, and kills the mildew. It is especially good on teak.
