I am a soon to be sailor. I will start taking classes the end of this week. I will be starting with ASA 101 & 103. Is there a protocol for tipping the Captain? How much should I tip the Captain? Is tipping normally done for these classes? Thanks

It's a personal choice

I'm an ASA instructor and I have been tipped a few times. I don't expect it in any way and I don't think any instructors should expect it. Most of us teach "on the side" and it is not our regular job/income. We teach because we enjoy sharing our passion with others. When tipping for services (other than restaurants and taxis) I view the tip as a way of showing appreciation and saying "Thanks for a job well done!" The recognition is more important than the amount of the tip and a nominal amount is usually appropriate. $incerely, Capt Jim

We did...

in the BVI many years ago. How many people in class? Are you living aboard and responsible for his/her meals? How many days? Did you enjoy it and feel you got out of it what you wanted? Ask others in the class, if any, what their plans are.

Thanks to All

Thanks to everyone for your respose to my question. I have a good feel for what is required. In the past when I have been on tours, and the tour guide did a real good job, I always tipped and told the guide how much I enjoyed the presentation. I will do the same for the Captain. Both my wife and I are very excited. We start tomorrow morning.

I agree with cap'n Jim

I agree that tipping is an expression of a job well done and a show of appreciation for the skill, experience and willingness to share shown by the instructor. For my part I tipped my ASA instructor an amount which would provide a nice dinner out with his wife or a bottle of his favorite liquor. As I recall that was around fifty bucks. A small amount compared to the knowledge, service and courtesy imparted to me and my fellow class mates. I teach skiing part time in my part of the world and like Capn Jim it is a side line and a chance to share my enthusiasm for my hobby. I never expect a tip but occasionally I get one. It is a warm fuzzy when offered and I often blow it on my student in the bar during the apres ski after glow. What it comes down to is: Did the instructor do a good all around job and if he or she did then a show of appreciation is appropriate.
