Grass fouls Propshaft

The South Bay Strainer has very tiny holes and with its wedge shape stuff slips by. In other words no serious suction going on at any single point. Keep in mind also that these small engines are not demanding massive amounts of water so these tiny holes provide enough of that flowing in and they do not clog easily. I personally would not like to see wider openings, but my experience is up here on LI and the grass you have I have never seen. Perhaps someone in your area or local marina can advise on the best strainer for the job. It seems to me to be nicer to keep that crap outside (I mean flowing astern bouncing off the strainer of course) the boat rather than having to clean a strainer inside.

That looks like a nice product...I assume mounted on the exterior hullside?
Might be a good addition next hauling.

This Hydrilla seaweed is growing very quickly...I think like inches a day...its like a monster in a bad dream.
Oh what to do, what to do...this Hydrilla is definatly a huge problem and is diminishing my 2016 summer sailing time

Since the idea of global warming is highly disputed and politically charged, you should probably take that discussion outside to the political forum where is belongs.

Back in the late 60's they were screaming about global cooling. "THE ICE AGE IS COMING THE ICE AGE IS COMING". When that got debunked the same folks needed a purpose so they invented global warming. Same folks same tired lack of proof. It's all based on computer modeling. Garbage in Garbage out. Lets face it, the facts are that the sun has way more effect on overall global temperatures than anything man could possibly do. You may not like to hear that and you may wish to argue the point but that is the facts. In regards to the eel grass or whatever you wish to call it...if you don't like it then protest to ban fertilizers within ocean watersheds. If you want to see the proof of that fly over the everglades on a sunny day and look down.

FYI...out here we are dealing with kelp beds. They grow and expand and then some years nothing. And yet we hear the same tired refrain...OMG global warming....this year not much kelp in the normally heavy areas that I boat in....but then again the water is warmer than normal...El nina?

no debate here...Correction; Thanks "Hot Summer Weather" and out of control Phosphate discharging.
This year experienced twice as many days (41) over 90 degrees than normal here.
Seems like this abnormally hot Summer has brought the most abundant "seagrass"(Hydrilla) I can remember here in the N Chesapeake. Brief research readings from an EPA study with Duke U seems to make a direct connection with Hydrilla growth and increased water temps. http://www.lakegastonguide.com/?q=node/981
My personal knowledge on seagrasses is very limited...20160826_143004_resized.jpg

I was hoping to confront it without triggering a major discussion. Toliver did the right thing, follow his example and please let global conclusions rest on either side of the isle.

BTY: Back to the reason from the topic, I've been a big proponent for electrical propulsion. So much better control, and so much quieter. You also end up with a slower prop speed, which should be less likely to get tangled up in the grass. I bought a 24 volt trolling motor off Ebay for less than 200 bucks. 400 bucks total including batteries. Might be a good solution if you are plagued with heavy grass.

We have similar problems here on the Lakes with invasive water milfoil. It likes to grow in shallow water like marinas and produces the same kind of matting. The problem often arises when you back out of the slip and your prop chops it into small pieces which then get sucked in and clog your strainer. A screen over the intake helps, but that can get clogged with zebra mussels which grow inside it. Its somewhat of a no win scenario.

I keep my air cooled 2 hp Honda outboard attached to my stern pulpit at all times. Never had to do so, but I can attach it to my transom swim ladder if my Diesel fails for any reason and I can't get it going again. Won't push me fast, but in a pinch....gives me some peace of mind.

O'day, do you have a picture of your setup?
We have a bad hydrilla problem in the shallow water near our dinghy dock but none in the deeper water by the slip. It stops the dinghy cold from drag on the shaft. It would easily wrap around your shaft and strut. The stuff is thick and heavy like an old wet mop.
As the records do not show a pattern of rising temp and this spring and early summer was very cool, I don't think that it is worse from temperature. My theory is that it is just getting worse with time as each year it grows a little more like land based perinnels. I have an opening external strainer that I have never had to clean. The internal water strainer often contains mud, but so far never any grasses. I wonder if cutting it with an underwater grass rake would clear it away.

Larry,
Please see my post #14 for photo of what I have. Won't help your prop but maybe your water intake.
