I while back there was a discussion of using the 3M pinstripe removal disks to take the vinyl graphics off the cabin. I purchased the discs and I am planning on using them this weekend. I was just wondering if I should just use a normal variable speed drill or do I need something special? -- Jeremy

Used Corded VSR Drill

I have a good cordless and I thought I'd give it a shot with that, but it didn't have enough 'Oomph'. But the good old Skil drill did the trick. I had four 3/4" stripes on each side of a Hunter 35.5 and it took them off without a problem, one disk. Probably about 4 hours, if my memory serves me correctly. Used some 'Goo-Gone' on a clean rag to clean off the dust, find any missed spots, and finish off. T J

Cool...

Cool I will hit Wal-Mart and pick up a cheap corded drill. I was wondering if my cordless would handle it or not. Thanks, Jeremy

Online at...

S & J Discount Tool. I was surprised when I received them yesterday. Each Disc is a stack of thin discs. They look like tortillas. Anyway I am loading up to go use them now. If everything works out I will post some before and after shots later today. -- Jeremy

It went so so....

Well the graphics came off so-so. I didn't even finish one side of the boat before all three discs tore themselves apart. I figured I did something wrong, but as I looked over the website I ordered them from I realized that I should of had an attachment to connect them to my drill. I figured I might so I emailed and asked them before I ordered because I didn't see the attachment listed right away. They responded that everything I needed was included with the discs. So I proceeded. I just emailed them to complain. I am half mad at them and half mad at myself for not looking better. Anyway $50 in pinstripe removal discs are in my trash can. I will post pictures of the results so far later. -- Jeremy

Another Option

I had an easy job of removing my cabintop stripes with a 4.99 wall paper scraper blade from Lowe's. just watch the corners of the blade so you don't gouge the gel coat. Use 'Goof-Off' to remove the remaining adhesive residue.

That's how I did it.

Worked great too. Instead of Goof Off I used mineral spirits applied wet with a paper towel and soaked the residue for a minute and scraped again. Gone, perfect too. The cabin top was free of stripes and residue in about 2 hours. Now for the hull,,, Oh, the picture shows the new stripes.
