GPS

I'm a rookie day sailer looking to purchase my first GPS. Any advise
as to which one might be a "best" buy for use in coastal bays and near
shore coastal cruising? We purchased our Vega several months ago and
have really enjoyed learning to sail on her. She is very "forgiving"
which, as a rookie, makes learning to sail that much more enjoyable!

Hi

Personally I like the Garmin GPS systems. You need to decide whether you
want a fixed unit or a small handheld. My personal preference is for a fixed
unit as they are much easier to read with a larger screen.

Garmin 126 or 128 or 152 are the three I would choose. Prices range from
£175 - £200. Cheaper in the US

Cheers

Hi,
I also like the Garmin system. I use paper charts alot and I perfer
the handheld GPS instead of mounted. I use it for quick position fixes
when I need it and then put it away until needed again. I have two
Garmin ETREX's. At $99 USD each, I can afford two in case one falls
over or goes out. You might try an inexpensive handheld til you are
confident on it's use and then move up to a nice mounted system with
all the bells and whistles later and keep the handheld as a backup.
That is what I was going to do but found that the handheld worked fine
enough for me.
Good luck,
Robert.

Hi Robert

I agree with you but with age comes failing eyesight (I am now 50) when the
paper print gets smaller, your arms get longer, Daily Telegraph is printed
smaller! so I then prefer the easy to read.I also have a handhedand likethe
Garmin 48 as it has same software as the 126 or 128. All personal
opinions....

See ya

I use a handheld and like it's portablity. I can bring it home and
hookup my laptop to upload waypoints, etc. I DO have to put on the
reading glasses though. :)

Hi

I have a Garmin 128, permanently mount. Best thing I ever bought for
Vista.

Hi,
I'm new to the group and not yet a Vega owner. I presently sail a San
Juan 24 out of Victoria BC Canada, and am looking for a Vega in my area.

Re the GPS: I bought a hand-held Garmin GPSMAP 76 a couple of years ago
and love it.
The screens are customizeable, and it has features such as "anchor
watch" and "man overboard". It has a large screen which is easy to
read, and good battery life (2 AA's). I've mounted it in my boat with
a "Ram" mount which allows me to swing it out into the cockpit when
needed. It's probably been superceded by a newer model by now.

Peter.

Just a word of thanks to all who were kind enough to share your
thoughts on which GPS to buy!! Your comments were most appreciated.
It's comforting to know that there are so many seasoned sailors who
are eager to share their experience and ideas with rookies like me!
Thanks again!!

I need to replace my Garmin 310 GPS. Features I'd like are a dedicated Man Overboard button, no external antenna, ability to wire to the 12v system, and that's about it. I'm not looking for chart plotting. Any suggestions?Nicholas Walsh

I have a Furuno - looks like the GP-32 shown on Furuno's
homepage. I have it about 4 or 5 years, works good and is
accurate- simple to operate and read, and no problems.

Ijust rcvd a flyer from West Marine. They have a GPSMAP 76 on sale
that looks like a good deal. It would, I think fill your reqmts
nicely. Thinking of getting one myself.

I have a GPSmap 76 that has served well for three years. I think
there is a 76C (color) out now that is even nicer.
It would meet all your requirements, I think.
