I intend to install a Garmin 546s (w/o transducer for now) and am curious about the wiring. I installed a GPS on my motorcycle (Yamaha FJR) and ran it straight to the battery (with an inline fuze) so I can run it whether the bike is "on" or not. I can see the utility of doing the same on the boat - run the power straight to the engine battery (in my case aft in the lazerette) with an inline fuze for protection and the ability to run it at all times.

I would appreciate any comments, thoughts or experiences others have had. I know as the "new guy" here I'm asking a lot of questions and I do consider all replies when I finally decide what I'm going to do, so thanks!

Jim, if it's closer and fused as you say, why not. Probably not a bad idea to put a switch in the wiring, too, just in case... A simple toggle switch would do.
