Al P.

We are looking for recommendations for someone who has not used a GPS as yet.. We are value driven and wondering about getting a unit that we can use in the car as well, since boat use would be minimal as most of the time we can see where we want to go in Puget Sound and the San Juan Islands...It gets tricky crossing the Strait of Juan de Fuca.. Would like a temorary mount outside on top of the /84 Edson pedistal guard .. Would like the biggest bang for the buck in the $500 to $700 or so range.. Thanks to one and all...Al P.

meets your criteria. You'll need to "learn" Garmin-speak, which includes having to check for updated software on the web, as well as going through menus to get to the GO TO function. Why Garmin doesn't have a GO TO button, like Magellan used to have,is beyond me. Stu

2nd Garmin

Hi Al - I believe Garmin has the best units in the handheld segment. Great user interface, reasonably priced etc. Just compare features and get only what you need. Best, Trevor

Buyer's Remorse

I recently purchased a Garmin 76C based on recommendations from this site as well as other sources. One retailer suggested that the Magellan Meridian should also be considered because it is more egonomically designed. The buttons are on the bottom which allows one to see the screen when it is held. The 76C has the buttons on top. When I hold the unit and press buttons, my hand covers the screen. Terrible design. The retailer was right!

I bought a GPSMAP 276C over the winter...so far it's been pretty handy. Used it down in the Grenadines in March and now using it on the Chesapeake. It works well in the car even without the extra driving package, but I would want to ge that if I was really interested in the driving functions more...but I bought it for the boat. also....bought a Snapit mount, which works great! http://www.snapitmarine.com/html/snapit_5.html
