My GPS a Garmin 12 displays "Upload Not Present" immediately when powered on. I have removed and replaced new batteries and changed locations, but the same message displays. I have searched and came up empty on the Garmin site. Any help is appreciated.

Lost Memory

I'm not too sure what a GPS 12 is, but how long did you leave the batteries out of it before putting new ones in? Also, have you been back outside where it can pick up signals? I have a Map76 that if you take to long changing batteries, will lose all user programed memory, and everything that I have in it has to be put back in. The factory data remains, but the unit has to be taken back out side to that it can receive signals before it will reprogram itself. I may not have explained that very well, but if you haven't been outside since you changed batteries, try that. Also, if you have an outside battery source (cigarette lighter plug in), plug it in the next time you change batteries and it will not clear the memory. If not, changing the batteries one at a time also helps. If not, call Garmin's customer service. I have dealt with them on a couple of occasions and they have always been helpful. Good Luck!

if you have take it outside and still can't get it to intialize, my feeling is the internal battery (that's the one you can't change that stores the preloaded stuff) is shot. Call Garmin customer service... they replaced the internal battery on my GPS 48 for no charge. It worked fine for another year, then when it crapped out again they wanted $100 to refurbish it. So I bought a new one instead.

Thanks

Thanks, I have the new version of the program downloaded and ready to install tonight. The internal battery may well be the problem, if the new software doesn't load I'll give Garmin a call.

Watch Garmin Tec. Support

I received the following message back from Garmin: "Thank you for contacting GARMIN International, From what you describe, it would appear that the unit is not operating correctly, and should be returned to the factory for service. The flat rate of repair for your unit is $59.00." Well $59 is pretty steep for a $159 unit, and especially bad when all I had to to fix the unit was download the Garmin revision software (free) and upload the program to the unit (3 minutes). Garmin has great products, but their Tech. Support must be outsourced.

Like I said...

the first time they diagnosed the problem over the phone, offered to fix it for free, with a turnaround time of less than 5 days. Less than a year later after that repair it just stopped working one day.... My call to the tech support people resulted in the same answer you got. There was no attempt to diagnose the problem over the phone and offer a solution. So my opinion of Garmin tech support has gone from "very satisfied" to "somewhat disappointed" I'm guessing they must have a new customer non-service manager. Stuff like this will come back to haunt them.
