I have a Garmin 48 GPS connected to my PC for navigation.I have a new PC that does not have a serial port but uses UBS insead.I know there are adaptors that will allow me to use the old cable to the new PC. Question, anyone have the same problem and do the USB/serial port adaptors work?

They work ok

Check eBay. They are really cheap. If your computer has an older operating system, you may need a driver. I just had this problem trying to interface a sewing machine (serial interface) to a computer with USB ports running winders 98. It required a lot of loud conversation with my wife. She was very frustrated but all is quiet now and the quilt is almost finished. Thank God!

Does your Garmin work inside the cabin? Thanks David

it works inside the cabin

The garmin 48 has a detachable antenna with a long cable, it will allow the antenna to be about 10 feet away from the unit and work.

USB

I had the same problem when I bought a new computer. I have recently installed a USB/Serial adapter cable with excellent results. Previously I used a PCMCIA adapter card to provide serial access with equally fine results.

Several places

You can buy them at CompUS, Staples, Best Buy, Office Max, or on the web. You are better off not buying a very cheap one. My guess would be to spend between $30 and $50. You can also go to the Garmin website and they will list one there for sale that will be compatible. My question is: When are the GPS manufacturers going to wake up and supply a USB cable for their units? Most new laptops and home PC's no longer have a serial port. That is like buying a car with the steering wheel optional. I have the same problem with my Magellan.

Some new PC's have a serial port

I just bought a brand new HP NC6120 and it was one of the things I checked to avoid having to look for an adaptor.

Nobeltec Sealevel

I've heard of several problems with the Keyspan adapters supporting USB 2, so went ahead and bought the ridiculously overpriced Sealevel unit sold by Nobeltec. Tough pill to swallow ($99), but I haven't had any problems with interfacing.

coment on GPS 48.

Just a heads up to let you know that Garmin will refurbish your GPS 48 for about $100. Mine failied twice, without warning. The first time was an internal battery (like the kind in your computer) that they replaced at no charge very quickly, because the battery was less than 2 years old, I guess. 1 year later the unit failed inexplicably and I was told that even though the unit was less than 3 years old they would not fix it but only refurbish the thing at your expense. I chucked it and bough the GPS 76, which I'm very happy with. So, what's the point? The point is...they are not reliable so get a back up. The newer models are much better.
