Down loaded Seaclear and NOAA charts to new laptop that has no serial ports. Gps that came with the boat is a Garmin 72 with a serial cable. Has anyone came up a proven adapter that works and if so, what is it? Thanks Ron

The "Purple One" is a serial to USB converter, see the attached link.

It is the only one that I found that would work completely with my three Garmin hand held GPSs.
I have no interest in this company, I only wanted a connector that would allow to interface with the USB posts on my many different PCs.

I have a Garmin at the pedestal connected to a laptop at the "nav station"
After trying a few and according to garmin's tech support, apparently the Radio Shack unit works the best. Got it and installed the driver on laptop, all is working perfect after almost 2 yrs. Knocking on wood....

The 'standard' for USB to 9 pin serial or macintosh mini-Din 8 serial is one of the various "keyspan" adapters.

I used the Radio Shack adapter as well
no problems. I downloaded all my old data from my old gps that was serial only, the uploaded to my new Garmin 76cx using the USB. No problems what so ever. I can't remember exactly but the cost was only $16 or so, definately not more than $30, and definately worth it for not having to re-enter all those waypoints all over again.

The one I bought communicates wirelessly through Bluetooth to the laptop.. It takes a bit of playing to get the programs to recognize the little reciever, but it all works well ! Good Luck
