Higher is better and watch out for chafe

Well, I'd not put the array at the top of the mast but up near the steaming light if you go for the mast option. Most radars are rated for a certan range. To get that you need to get it up high enough for it to see that far. Also radar "seeing" is not the same as visual "seeing". There is a formula for it but I don't have my books in front of me.

Pole Mount

If you trailer, consider hinged pole mount. See pics in Macx section.

Radar

Radars have an available range. 24 mile is the most common for normal non commercial use. The scanner should be installed on the mast likely above the steaming light, not on the stern. You or individuals on your deck do not need to be exposed to the radar waves from the stern installation. The radar reflector should be install as high on your shrouds as you can get it. Many sailboaters will use the type which you can raise on a flag halyard when you need it, but the higher permanent installion is desired. Good luck.

Will the Mast Support that Extra Weight?

It always looked a little on the weak side to me. I think I would go with the stern mounted pole install. Would also be much easier when raising or lowering the mast. You definitly do not need any added weight on the mast then.
