I just installed a Garmin 183C and interfaced it with my 6 year old Autohelm 4000+. When a waypoint is selected and the pilot engaged, the boat takes a right, goes off course ~0.4 XTE and slowly comes back and will find the watpoint. If you go to Standby, (say to avoid something), and reengage, it'll do this all over. Called Garmin and Raymarine and they both blamed each other, although Ray seemed to have the most believable answer. Looks like the new Garmin puts out a more advanced NMEA code and the 6yo pilot is a tad confused. There is no way to set the Garmin to the older NMEA version. Had no problems with my older plotter.Anybody seen this? Garmin's solution is for me to buy a new pilot, (mine's working just fine and I don't want to spend the bucks!!). Seems ridiculous that a new GPS will not talk nicely to an older pilot.
