GPS part - What is it?

I pulled the Garmin 182C from the Edson Pedestal mount last fall to store for the winter. I found these two parts laying on the bottom of the mount when I opened it up. They are magnetic and when put together look like they wrap around a wire. What are they?

It is a noise suppressor. The same as the cylindrical thing on the wire for you computer monitor.

Open up your manual. They are not always needed but the manual will tell you if it is.

Darn. I thought it may be a flux capacitor!!!!

Tim: If the PO gave me a manual, it may be on the boat. However, I don't recall seeing one. In the mean time, I just did a quick search based on Bob's reply and have a follow up questiion. It seems to appear that it goes around the coax cable (not the power cable). Is that correct?

They're ferrite cores, which are used for EMI/RF noise suppression, as stated previously. I don't believe they should be magnetized...but will be magnetic, since they are made of ferrous metal.

It's a ferrite bead clamp

You can also use them on the power wire to suppress noise feeding back into the electrical system.
