I purchased an EAGLE 642c iGPS for installation on my 1986 Catalina 30.
The steering pedestal in the cockpit is equipped with a depth sounder to the left of the wheel, and a speed indicator (that has never worked) on the right of the wheel.
1. Optimally, I would like to remove the speed indicator and mount the GPS there. Can the power cable go through the steering pedestal and be connected to the battery below?

There is also a transducer with this GPS unit that is designed to be mounted on the outside of the hull. I do not want to drill any holes in my boat. It is said that this transducer can be mounted on the inside of a fiberglass hull on the aft 1/3 of the boat.
2. Where would you suggest this transducer be placed? Under or near the steering cable???

Go ahead, drill some holes, you'll get used to it. Someone else has already, i'm sure.
Yeah, I have cables going through the pedistal into the floor on my 85. If you go below and remove the fiberglass "tub" screwed to the cieling of the quarter berth you can see all the steering, wiring and stuff.
