Which chartplotter/GPS would anyone recommend in the sub $1000 range? This will be for Biscayne Bay and Florida Keys cruising.

I've been checking

I'm also in the market for one. I've been looking around and find the Garmin GPSMAP 182 to be quite nice. It has a load of great features: plug-in chips, 10 gray-scale chart (color coming in January), great resolution, zoom-in zoom-out, etc. It retails for about $700 plus $150 per chip. The chips cover a wider area than the competition. Also check ebay. There's an outfit selling them new for a discount.

No Standard Horizon 150

I purchased a Standard Horizon model 150 and it never worked properly. Could not attain a fix even when my little Garmin 45XL would fix immediately. I returned it for full credit.

R; I agree with Paul Akers. One other feature I like about that model is the screen size.

Need Bright Screen

Garmin 182 may be just the bill. I've got a Garmin 162 and find that the screen during the daylight hours is not bright enough. I think the 176C has a bright screen, but it is substantially smaller than the 182. I would like to see the 182 operate in day hours to make sure one can see th e 10 gray scale screen during bright sunny days with reflection. 2006 and 2010 have a day screen and are bright enough, but so is the price. To solve my problem, I have a GPSMAP76 that I also have in the cockpit that allows me to look at the gps while leasurely relaxing seated. To each his own. Oh, the 162 screen is quite adequate at night both in size and brightness.

Nope, Mike. That's not me. I grew up in Rhode Island and went to high school in Newport. I now keep my boat in RI and live 20 miles away in S.E. Massachusetts. But if you want to buy me the Garmin 182, I'll take it.

Dakota - Garmin 182C

I understand that Garmin is coming out with the 182C in January. It will be the color version of the 182. If it's anything like the $$$ color versions they have, then it should be a hit.

162 good and bad

good little unit ... but daylight in the cockpit direct under the sun is a struggle especially with dark polorized glasses. I wouldn't get any smaller screen though. am now wiring in the fish finder to go with it.

Just bought a Garmin 176C GPS-chartplotter

last Thursday. Went from Miami to Pumkin Key Friday, then to snorkel on Dry Rocks Saturday and into Key Largo Saturday night. Sunday out to Grecian Rocks and then back to Miami for a late dinner in the Grove. Brought the unit back to Toronto on Monday to play with. I will hard wire it on the pedestal when I go back to the boat on the 20th. It worked especially well and has perfect detail for the reefs. No problems viewing in direct sunlight. Still needed paper charts to plot my course as area too small. Email me if you need more info.

Derek . . .2 items??

Derek . . . 1. Next time you make that route, let me know and I'll carry your bags . . . 2. Question on the 176C memory . . . specs say that a question about memory is not applicable to the 182C (in contrast to the 162 - 2.5 megs or the GPSMAP76 - 8 megs) . . . . yet it says that it will accept blue charts and MapSource Maps. So how much of such can you load on the 182C? Be sure that you answer question #1 <grin>. Jim

Paul 182C - list $1,000 discount $750 ??

Paul: I would guess the unit will discount for about $750 . . . 20 to 25% off list. Any thoughts. Also, same question as I asked Derek . . . any reason why they don't list the internal memory size? Is this because chips, or flashcards can be added?

$750??

$750 would be a decent price for the 182C since the 182 retails for $700. Then each chip is about $150. I'll be watching the Providence

Jim no need for bags

all my gear is on the boat. No problem with memory the 176C uses blue chips at $150.00 or $280.00 each depending on size of area.
