I am mostly interested in boat speed and distance covered. Do all the apps give this basic information. How much memory storage do they take up?

I like the free iSailor app for iPad, use my iPhone for WIFI hotspot, and compliment with a purchased app from Navionics. ISailor charges a minimal fee for certain chart locations.
I use skipper for iPhone. Tons of charts for sea or land, local weather, active captain (Marina reviews), and all the speed monitoring functions you could think of.

Or if you don't want to burn up your phone charge, you could always pick up a little hand held something from Garmin. Probably have those at Best Buy or REI.

Skipper has Active Captain built in? It must be only in the pro version, unless I've been missing it?
I used to use the Skipper free version exclusively. It is a good app. But lately I've been using Navionics. I think I paid $10 or something for it.
Yes, built in. It's fairly useful if people add to the reviews. If I actually make it somewhere this year ( lately 24+ kn wind, busy schedule...) I'll add a review just to help the next guy. It's definitely encourage me to visit more places. Wish I could remember what I paid for it, but it's worth it to me. I just activated auto-NOAA map updates. Didn't know it had that. Lol.
He's a screenshot of Racine WI. Many listings with AC available. I highlighted a few. Also, I exposed the function wheels on the bottom of the screen. I like the customizable multi-wheels, or whatever they're called. Caters to my needs/whims at the time. Sometimes it's just fun to see the numbers.

Ha! I was rambling on again. The app is called Skipper (for iPhone). It has many functions to plan, chart, monitor, and record your sailing trip. It also features ActiveCaptain, a user review service for marinas, restaurants, shops, and public launches. You'll need a separate account for AC, but it will give you an idea of what's available on your travel map. Pretty useful when you need ice, fuel, or a decent place to eat.polarbrer said:

It's the only app I've used, but I guess there are others too that might be equally/more useful. I know that gps makers, i.e.: Garmin, Lowrance, have apps that connect with their devices for the boat. I've been considering a handheld gps or maybe small chart plotter so I don't drain my phone battery. Smart phone apps are great, unless you don't have a way to charge them while underway. Though we haven't done much more than inland lakes while learning to sail as a family.
Guess I'll have to pony up a few bucks for the premium version to get the Active Captain, it's not on my free app. And AC flat refuses to develop a viable phone app ... they're too busy trying to be Floating Facebook.

I've never been on ActiveCaptain outside of Skipper, other than to register. Ha! Floating Facebook? That's all we need, another MyFace+. I'm not really a FB user. Facebooker? Though I did sign onto a Catalina22 Facebook group a few years ago.
Active Captain makes cruising unfamiliar waters safer and more enjoyable. It's nice to get advice from cruisers that visited before you. Also is a source for tidbits on dock fees etc that save money and tears.
On our recent trip I used the trial version of navionics for a day but switched back to my $10 Skipper app.
