the map requriment is implied Tom S

Did you have "Shall have proper and sufficient equipment to provide for the safe passage of the vessel?" I believe that is the line they read to you in court after you break something or kill somebody. We had a club meeting where a CG guy spoke. He said that while they don't hassel the plesure boaters they certanly could. Not that the CG has to MAKE me have something that does what a map does. Roosa Family TRITIUM

Garmin 172C

We have been using the Garmin 172C for a couple years now and we love it. It is very programable, very easy to use, has a very easy to read screen and is fairly cheap. I also have my sonar plugged into it so everything is right at my finger tips. When out for a day sail we mainly use it for trip and time info for the log book and depth but on long trips it does it all. I cannot speak for any other chartplotter out there as the 172C is the only one I have ever used but I am sure they are all good for the mot part. Go to West marine and play with what they have on the shelf to see how simple they are to use. Find one you like and if the price is right that is the one to get. Just a note..a dockmate has a top of the line system (can't remember the brand but not important) that is so difficult to use that he does not use it. Even their tech support was unable to help him out so choose wisely. While chart plotters are great make sure to keep sharp using paper charts if you plan to do more than day sailing and more importantly keep sailing fun!
