GPS/Chartplotter systems?

I am in the process of changing boats this winter. Going from a 27 footer to a new 33. The 27 had a Standard Horizon CP170C at the nav table, but nothing at the helm. On the new boat I would like to have units both places and have them interact - waypoint marks, etc. Choices seam to be 2- CP170C or a Raymarine system with HSB2. All thoughts and suggestions appreciated. Barry

Depends On Your Needs

If you are in a bay area or river where you need a ton of waypoints to keep out of trouble, what you suggest makes sense. However, integrated units are really expensive... certainly more than a chartplotter below and a handheld above. I have used integrated units and set up my boat for exactly that. But, I find all I really need in the cockpit is a repeater in the form on an instrument that will take the NEMA output to display the waypoint bearing, distance and cross-track error. I don't need the chart itself. Lots of instruments will repeat the NEMA output. My Furuno radar and Autohelm 7000 head both read out. But... it's your choice. I would tend to get whatever brand you are going to install for all the instruments. Good luck; Rick D.

We've got the Raymarine system

We've got the Raymarine HSB2 system and are very happy with it. Having everything integrated makes life much easier. I use the chartplotter at the helm all the time, particularly in conjunction with the autopilot (i.e., place a point on the chart and tell the autopilot to steer for it as opposed to just setting a course on the autopilot). I really only use the unit at the nav station for route planning. One thing to bear in mind is that although most info and functions are available on either station, the advanced radar functions (like guard zones) are only available on the unit that is attached to the radome. Rick, you are correct

I sail in the Chesapeake Bay and tributaries. We constantly go up new rivers and creeks. My wife and I find we are in need of the chart (spoiled with color already) more than waypoint repeating features. Since I was not planning on radar, my initial decision was two Standard Horizon CP170C because we were familiar with this model and happy with the display size. I have also looked at the CP1000 for the nav table because it can double as a video monitor and the GPS is separate and can drive the CP170 at the helm. Thanks, Barry

Well, Barry

I think you should consider something like a Raymarine combination radar/chartplotter and then an RC520 unit down below as a repeater. Furuno also has some combo units that will repeat functions also when networked. I hate to see you put several thousand dollars into a repeating chartplotter and not have the ability to integrate your radar. I'm sure you will want to add radar. Give it some thought. Rick D.

Raymarine with Laptop at Nav station

I have an integrated Raymarine HSB2 system with the 7" color chartplotter at the helm and laptop at Nav Station with Raymarine software. I have yet to fully utilize the laptop and it's planning capabilities, but will. I use the radar overlay on chart with the marpha tracking function quite frequently on Kentucky lake to avoid barges. When going into a cove, I split the screen with the chartplotter and sonar. This is great for shallow areas. I use my autopilot with both waypoints, going to cursor, and with waypoints and routes. I recently motored 30 nm back at night avoiding 2 tows- all with this system. I have ST60 instruments, 6001 below decks pilot with 150 course computer. Highly recommend this system! sv Persistence H356.

Below Decks

Jerry, Tell me about the 6001 you have in your 356. I was told that the below decks would not work on the 356 as the area under the deck plate is not really protected from weather. Let me know what you did. Thanks. Dan Jonas (S/V Feije II)

Thanks, Jerry

Jerry, Thanks for the photo. This is exactly as I envisioned my helm - nice and neat. Who's pod did you use to install the plotter head? I hadn't really thought about using a laptop instead of a second plotter head at the nav desk. In fact I liked the CP1000C because it doubles as a 10" display for a PC - backwards thinking? Could you post a picture of your nav desk? BTW my new boat is the Hunter 33 just announced at Annapolis boat show. Thanks again, Barry

6001 Autopilot on 356 will work

The 6001 autopilot will work, but requires cutting out a portion of the port locker so the arm will fit. My dealer, Lighthouse Landing, cut out the section and then glassed in a teak cover over the steering arm. It has worked great. I still have a lot of room in the rear locker. Hunter said it could not be done and they are correct if one does not modify the hull for the arm. Contact Tim at Lighthouse Landing for exact installation. Go to http://www.lighthouselanding.com I don't have a current photo of the nav station with the laptop set up. The pod for the 7" display is made by Navpod. sv Persistence

Jerry, is that the term Hunter used, 'It could not

be done'? Wow, Hunter saying that to cruisers or any sailor, is like my favorite mag, Hotrod, saying the same thing. Shocking. *pop

Fred - Dealer advised by Hunter

Fred: My dealer/installer told me that Hunter had advised him it wouldn't work. He made it work and sent them the information on how it was installed. I was insistent on getting a below decks autopilot as I didn't want a wheelpilot. Merry Xmas Jerry sv H356 Persistence

Jerry, I'm with you. Since our boat was new we

have had a Autohelm 6000. (I installed it, that's a story) It drives via a separate tiller, not the quadrant. And as such, the pedestal has done almost nothing over the years and has NO WEAR! The only way to go if you can fit one in and you did. Good job. Hey Hunter, naner naner *butt Oh, there is a shot of our drive unit on my web site but it is hard to see, for what it's worth.
