I sailmy H34 on the Chesapeake and have used a Garmin 45XL GPS unit for a number of years. I have it connected to my ST4000 autopilot which works great. However, I am considering a new GPS unit which has chartering capabilities and would appreciate recommendations. I would like to keep the cost below $400. Is there such an animal out there? Can you actually navigate from the chartplotter chart? As you can see, I not well informed. Bob on the "Juno"

Added a Chartplotter last year

And now I wonder how I lived without it. I bought a Hummingbird NS 25 with fishfinder also, because I also needed a new depth finder. It was about $650 plus abut $200 for the chart. But I think Garman has some handhelds that are more reasonable. It has allowed us to enter coves we would never have considered before and we go out at night with alot more confidence now. If it wasn't for the damn crab pots you wouldn't even have to look up as you wind your way down a narrow channel.

Garmin 162

Try the Garmin 162. It is under $400.00 before you add the chart cartridge and works well. However if you want accuracy within eight feet you will need to go to a Raytheon 320 for about $599.00. I thnk the Garmin 162 is a very good entry level GPS/Chart.

Suggestions on a good handheld?

For awhile, I've been debating getting a handheld GPS, since I have the fortune/misfortune of owning 2 boats. I had planned on getting a Garmin 48 since it routinely came up as the "recommended" choice. I just read somewhere that this model is being discontinued. Any suggestions on whether the 48 is worth the money compared to other newer models?

Garmin 48 Handheld

I am very happy with ours. All the right features, and good form factor. I have compared it to other, newer models, and haven't seen a better package yet. (It's inevitable that one will come along, though.)

Garmin 175

My wife is the navigator and she uses a Garmin 175 (handheld) and likes it very much. We also use a Garmin 12XL to tell me where to go which she does all the time. :) We've connected to two Garmins to the Ray radar/chart 70 and we have more information than we need.

Looking at Magellan 330M

I am also looking for a new GPS and was impressed by the magellan 330. It's fairly new and do not have all the specs, but maybe it's a good replacement for the 48. Does anyone use the perimiter alarm(?) for anchoring? Paul Bryan S/V WhisperIII, H34 WWW.lufferslane.com

Check out

the new "Standard Horizon CP150". It's a 12 channel WAAS receiver-chart plotter and it's under $400. A local C-map of your choice is also included in the latest West Marine promotion. A.B.

Buying Std Horizon CP-150

Many thanks for the input regarding which GPS/Chartplotter you might recommend at a cost of around $400. I reviewed the information on all that you recommended and finally decided to order the Standard Horizon CP-150 from West Marine as they gave the cartridge as a bonus. Thanks again, Bob

me too

Yes although I haven't tried one yet the new Standard Horizon seems like the best buy on the market from west marine with the free c-map for $399.99. Twelve channels with WAAS sounds like the best deal around to me too, so you can disregard my earlier advice about the Garmin 162 its a nice unit but has no WAAS, I would go for the Standard Horizon 150 myself.
