I bought my first sailboat last July and sailed just about every weekend from then till Oct, when I had to pull it out for the winter. The previous owner "threw in" a garmin gpsmap 76 which was a great addition to the paper charts I bought. Problem is that it is black and white and damn near unreadable in certain lighting conditions.
I'd like to replace it, and have looked at some of the larger units but it seems I would have to buy a Navpod to mount it. I may be able to do that on the Edison wheel pedestal. Either that or maybe a garmin gpsmap 78s color handheld.
I'm curious what others use on a boat of similar size, and what you might suggest.

We have our Garmin 2006C mounted up under dodger on a Johnny Rae mount. Can easily be unplugged and removed.

I have a Ram mount for my 78s (and 76Csx) - works great. Use of external power cord makes it far more useful during night sails.

Same here. I have a RAM mount at the helm for my 76 CSX and have used it on battery (lasts about 20 hours) plugged in to the boats power, which is better. For the big picture and at night when I need AIS I use a laptop and OPpen CPN.

We have a bigger boat and have successfully used our Garmin GPSMap 76Cx for many years. They're on sale most everywhere, but you have to buy the charts separately. The 78 might be a better overall deal.

If you can spare about $400 bucks then I recommend that Garmin 440s. We mounted ours to the wheel binnacle & its really great to have a dedicated small chartplotter which is small enought not to get in the way, but big enough to view. We bought the optional depth sounder transducer for a hundred that allows you to view your depth from the corner of the 440. Hard to beat this unit for the price. Plus avoiding be grounded can save you a lot more in the long run!
