I have one

I have one and I think it is the best. Not only can I use it on my 356 but when I go charter,I take it for a Chartplotter.I have used it on multiple trips across the "Stream" and it has worked flawlessly. The only down side is the price of regions and the fact that htere are no free updates so after a few years if you want an update you have to pay again. But other than that,i have not used anything else as versatile and useful.

Heard of some problems in bright sunlight.

I have the grayscale version 176 and love it..... Like the color but extra $100 is a bit much. Jim S/V Java

For the price...

...you might want to go for the Garmin 182. Consumer Marine Electronics has the mono for 499. I have one and extremely pleased with it. Compare it to the 176 on their web site. www.consumersmarine.com

$100 rebate on the 176C now.

There is also a $100 rebate on the 176C as well. I don't think it is available on the other models.

I like it

I have a 176 color and like it alot. I choose the 176 over the 182 because of the smaller size. There is not a lot of room in the cockpit of my 89 30' hunter and I mounted the 176 at the pedestal. It is easily removed to store inside at the end of the day. The charts are great and you have some options on how they are displayed. For instance I have the depths on my charts in a larger than normal font so I can read them easier. I also found it very easy to run my Simrad autopilot from the nav feature on the 176. It is also easy to take the 176 home with you or down inside the cabin to plan your next voyage. It is nice to have the battery power. When hooked up at the pedestal I use the 176 to monitor charging voltage. I also use the built in tide tables alot.

I'm please with my 176

I too have had no problems with my 176. I have the black/white version. I tried the color and did not find it that much better to read in bright sunlight than the black/white. I also purchased Garmin's bluechart on CD ROM and the kit to program the 176's chips from my laptop. Thw whole system works well.
