As a born Brooklynite, I can tell you assuredly that the boat shown in this photo not only no longer has a keel, but the fibreglass exposed to the water is only 1/64" thick....if that. One of my aquaintences fell into the waters of the Gowanus Canal.............we had to shoot him!!!!

The owner of this boat is VERY BRAVE indeed.

Gowanus Canal sounds like a body part. Digestive tract. Toward tail end.

It is amazing that the canal has been cleaned up so much..... I spoke with a guy at the building I was at and he said the owner goes out sailing every afternoon.

I seem to remember the canal catching on fire at one point due to all the Petro waste on the water.

Oh it was a toxic brew alright...... back in the day when we just dumped everything plus the kitchen sink into the water without any thought. Still not so clean I would imagine, however the water did not look bad and I did/do see fish and other sea life in there. Amazing how mother nature can come back.

And, that "sea life" will eat you!!! There's even talk of a monster living in there.

Over the past decade, there have been a series of plans and efforts to re-claim the canal for local use...including converting it to Brooklyn's Venice with restaurants lining it's shores. So far, those efforts have been fruitless. Even the Feds can't figure out how to screw it up even more than it is. Maybe some day............
