noise

i keep my boat in a marina that is more of a working marina ie commercial fishing, id like to see you get up in the middle of the night and ask those guys to keep it down, i think they would find some new uses for cheap bungees

wow!

Well..........after reading all this I ran to the marina. My main halyard is secured to the aft end of the boom, kind of a safety measure in case the topping lift fails so it does not slap. The unused jib halyard, I have roller furling, was attached to the base of the mast. I never heard it slap but moved it anyway to a life line. My mast and/or rigging "sings" in the wind if it is tensioned tight with the main sheet so I leave that a little loose (sounds like tires whinning at highway speed). I kind of like hearing halyards slap, boats creaking and other nonengine related noises that vessels in the water make. For sure I realize that others may not and act accordingly. However, we are all entitled to an occasional loudness such as a party or other gathering as long as one does not make it an everyday occurance. In the end though I agree that unneccesary noise should be avoided. Like me not all are aware that we are guilty of creating a nuisance.

One for the sleep machine!

Heck, the other day at Radio Shack, one of the sounds in their "sleep machine" (in addition to a brook, rain, etc.) was a train. A TRAIN! I suppose you can add the sound of slapping halyards to it! It's brilliant!
