Hey everyone,

I just added one of these to my gooseneck- got it from D&R. Had a new sail made reecently with 2 reef point fro Doyle Sails - nice work-- the reef points have a dacron strapping that runs through it with a round ring on each side of teh sail at the reef points.

With the sail flanked when reefed these rings are far from the reef hook.

This may sound like a stupid question, but what do you do to reef the main with this reef hook? Do you run a line through teh ring then through around the hook, then tie it tight? Do you make pre-made lengths for each reef point with a clip on one end and a loop on the other to be attached to the reef hook?

COnseidering adding a reefing system at some point for the leech/foot section, (thanks for the great pictures guys), but for the mean time I will be just tying off the back with some lines until I get around to the fancy stuff later.

I am very interested in hearing how you all manage the tack reefing point if you have a reef hook!

Could you get a picture? I'm still working on getting a better reef hook setup on PRONTO.

I won;t be out at my boat again for another week or so - travelling again, but I'll take a picture next time. Afetr reading another posting, looks like I will have to remove a few of the slugs from the mast track to allow the reefing poiints on the main to drop down enough to hook onto the reef hook. Seems like that could be awkward having to mess with tools while reefing and unreefing the main, especially when single handing.

Paul,
I forgot to mention that. On my O'Day 222 and also my friend Wayne's Seaward 22, we need to take two sail slides out of the track before we reef the mainsail. You may need to do this also. I have a fixed goose neck fitting on my mast. In other words, I have no tack downhaul and a gate for sail slides will not work on my mast. For a sail slide stop, I'm using a 3/16" X 12" braid which I have tied to my mast winch bracket. I tie a reef knot in this line and it works great for a sail stop. If your mast winch is not located in the right spot to use a rope, you can use a nylon wire clip with a screw to hold it in place. The rope works great for me.

Put a couple of drops of Dawn Dish washing detergent on each sail slug and you'll see a big difference in the way that the sail goes up and comes down. Each rain will wash the soap out and clean that mast groove. Add more Dawn as needed.

I think that's the jist of it Paul, which is why I always try to make my decision to reef before I go out. Next season, we will mark the main halyard so that we know how far to ease it in order to pull out the track stop without having too many slugs spill out, rather than trying to count the slugs as they pass through. I don't single handle in conditions that require reefing as of yet, but that might help. You'll still have to deal with the track stop, but at least you can have the main halyard at the correct position right away.
