I have a 1977 22' Oday new this year. Does the gooseneck pin go through the grommet on the sail when setting up main. added Fig 2 ....pin above gooseneck.

Yes, that pin should go through the lowest grommet on the luff, right at the bottom corner of the sail. Otherwise, how would you tighten the outhaul and tension the luff with the halyard? There also may be more grommets on up the luff a foot and a half or so, with corresponding ones on the leech. These are for reefing the sail.
Brian - thanks. I could get the pin through the grommet ...but struggled and could not get it all the way through the other side of gooseneck. I was running out of daylight and wanted to make sure i wasn't doing something wrong. I will go back tonight a try to see why pin is so tight.
