My Uncle just purchased a C & C 32. Yesterday while sailing we discovered that the gooseneck had an issue. One of the rings on the gooseneck part that attaches to the mast broke. He has already ordered the part from C & C.

We went to take the gooseneck off but it is frozen on. The stainless steel screws have reacted with the aluminum mast and they won't budge. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to remove these screws and this old gooseneck part?

There is a screw driver that when you place it on the screw and hit it with a hammer it unscrews the screw. The same seizing happens on motorcycle engine cases.
It's probably called and impact screw driver.

We did try the impact driver. Nothing helped with that and it started to strip the screw head. I am not familiar with PB blaster.

The thing about heat that scares us is that it is a tempered aluminum mast and if you heat it too much it could damage the mast, right?

We are thinking about cutting the screws out and moving the gooseneck up about 1/2 inch. We would re-drill the holes and tap them for the new goose neck.

Interesting enough, the original fitting is cast aluminum but the replacement will be stainless steel.

PB is a spray can of of stuff like WD-40 but a lot better for what you want to do. If you have to drill them out try using GOOD Carbid bits. Special ones that look a little different than a regular bit. You should be able to drill it a size smaller than the Screw and then retap the Threads without chanring the location .

I'd drill out the fasteners and tap the same holes for the next larger size fastener; or second choice as suggested , move the gooseneck up or down enough to accomodate new holes.
There's no way you can count on re tapping the existing threads as it's likely the stainless reacted with the aluminum. Remember that PB Blaster has Acetone in it and is even more highly flamable than WD40.

Try a carpenter's bit brace with an adapter and a new bit. You can restore the holes with rivet nuts.

That's what I had to do.

BTW Hex head screws (that you use an Allen wrench for) make a nice neat finish and are easier to drive and remove.

Don't forget the Tef-Gel when you put it back together.

We managed to get the old gooseneck part off of the mast today. We ended up drilling out the screws. It was a lot of work but it is done. The new piece should be in tomorrow and my Uncle will probably mount the new gooseneck. He will probably have to tap new holes but at least the one piece is now out.

Has anyone tried using helicoils? If it's drilled out cleanly you can re-tap it and install the same size stainless helicoil using the same location.

Helicoils work great if done according to the installation instructions.. Use lots of TefGel if anywhere near aluminum..

We once tried the impact-remover on a boom-end fitting to no avail. The screw panhead was enough to get visegrips on, and they loosened the screws.

Looking for a picture of a goose net fitting to a McGregor 21/22. I am "rebuilding" and don't know if I have all the parts. Also my Mast is 24' not the 21' in specifications (measured it). Is there an easy way for one person to raise a mast like this one?

i use spray white lithium grease on my gooseneck to keep it free and use able---might consider something like that on your new one??..goood luck with the conversion--sounds like an upgrade.......smooooth sailing.....~~~~~~~_/)~~~~~~~

One warning about PB Blaster...it is a good paint stripper.
