bennetau first 310 stockton
While having a glorious downwind sail yesterday, the boom suddenly came off the mast on my bennetau first 310. I am a little confused as to how it goes back on. Anybody out there have a diagram, sketch, photo by chance?

Here is a picture of mine on the 310. Mine lacked the needed bushings to avoid wear when I bought the boat so that's why you see it worn. The fixture on the mast has since been replaced and properly bushed. Basically, stainless washers to use as spacers to keep the fixed and moving parts separated from one another. On a temporary basis before I could fix it, I bushed it with Teflon bushings that the cat sailors use on the base of their masts - that is what you see in the pic. But the pic should show you how it fits together. I'll be out at the boat tonight and if I remember it, I'll shoot a new pic of the current arrangement. US Spars website should have the parts explosion for that mast, boom and related hardware. Go here and plug in the boat details on the left side of the screen and it will take you to the parts details. http://www.usspars.com/

BTW, any luck racing your 310? Ours simply would not live up to its PHRF. Just wondering...

We have just recently started seriously racing it. The local PHRF number we have been assigned is a 156 and to that they have added 9 sec/mile to account for using a roller furled jib. That is our Main/Jib number. To that we subtract 12 sec/mile if we declare as using a spinnaker (done before each race). So, 165 if no spin and 153 with a spin. Courses are most often W/L with about a one mile leg length.

When I bought the boat several years ago, the sails, bottom and a lot of the equipment (clutches/sheaves/blocks/etc) was worn out. I've since replaced all of the sails, worn out stuff, added spinnaker gear and took the bottom down to the gelcoat and did a proper bottom job on it. So, it's only this summer that the boat was race prepared. We have assembled a crew of good experienced guys and the few races at the end of our first half of the racing season we have raced, we have been in the hunt. But, the hot boat on the lake was not racing as he'd already wrapped up the "Spring Series". In addition, we've been seeing a lot of light air in the last month or so which is not usual for this time of year (light stuff doesn't usually start until August) and light air is not this boats sweet spot. Next week we'll start the fall series and the hot boat (S2 7.9, well sailed) will be back out. So, that will tell us how we are sailing it relative to the assigned PHRF number. If we run better than that number consistently, we'll likely get adjusted downward for next spring. But, some of the numbers I've seen for this boat are pretty optimistic I think. Mine is the Short keel version, 310 SD, and carries the Z Spars (US Spars) Z 401 7/8 Tapered mast.
