Wow I downloaded the free google earth and it is incredible. Not a replacement for charts but definately useful information. It is just plain fun to go to places that you have been or have never been. You can zoom in to the level of fuzzy sailboats that you can see in their slips or at anchor. Individual houses on shore.

Funny you should post this. I was just using Google Earth to view the sailboats in marinas at Plymoth and London. (Just wasting time when I should be working!)

Try also Flash Earth. http://www.flashearth.com/ Both are fun to play with.

Here is another great site (see link)

Just make sure when you zoom in on your boat that you don't have someone on board that you wouldn't want certain people to see. You can almost tell what brand of beer you have in your hand.

Caguy - no, they're not live thank Goodness!

I think all the photos were taken about a year ago. They update periodically. Just imagine if they were live - yikes!!!

Cool link. Some of the photos are just a touch dated - I note that Bowens Inn in Solomons MD is included, though it burned to the ground last year.

Maps.live

My current favorite. Check out the bird's eye view that's available in metro areas. It's quite amazing. http://maps.live.com/

Yet Another

For yet another, try ActiveCaptain and join so that you can help update it. The more support a site like this gets the more usefull it becomes. I see Flash is much like google, rarely updated. I actually subscribed to Google Earth for a year and discovered they do not update those maps. All I have to do is check my neighborhood for recent developments I see physically that do not appear on the maps, some are a few years old and still not represented. http://www.activecaptain.com/

And just tied it up to my GPS on the boat about twenty minutes ago. It does show my location OK using a generic GPS mouse-type bud fine. I used a location I had in cache without an internet connection and it seems to work fine. However, at this point, altho I saved a bunch of locations, they all come up with the same one regardless of my save. Second, I can't stop the thing from planning down the the lowest view which isn't usable. Third, I find I can't use the GPS on my charting program while Google Earth is connected to the GPS. However, I assume can solve these issues and that it will be fun to play with. Anyone having answers is welcome to chime in tho. Rick D. PS: It's 80 degrees right now, and I'm changing to shorts ;D
